The Book Thief
↣ Symbol
One symbol in my book is Liesel's foster father, Hans', accordion and when he sings. This symbolizes peace, happiness, and comfort. When Hans would sing play the accordion, Liesel and Rosa, Liesel's foster mother, would all feel these different varieties of emotions. Also, when Hans left to go into the army, Rosa and Liesel would hold on to the accordion as comfort and hope that Hans will come back safe. It shows this in the text when it says, "The book thief's desire to hear a note was exhausting, and still, it would not come"(Zusak 429). This shows how the accordion brings comfort and that is why Liesel wants it to be played.
↣ Symbol
Another symbol in my book is The Grave Digger's Handbook. The book represents the first book that Liesel could read, and \ the last time she saw her mother and brother which was Liesel's past life. This makes Liesel upset because it reminds her of losing her only family. It shows this in the text when it says, "The book's meaning. 1. The last time she saw her brother. 2. The last time she saw her mother"(Zusak 38). This shows how much the book means to Liesel and how it would make her very upset because of her loss and her past life.
↣ Events
In the book the event when Liesel is reading to the people in the bomb shelter this is an event were the theme, in life we learn that words have great power, is shown. When Liesel starts reading people start to calm down even in the stress of the situation. People stop crying and they listen to the words. It shows this in the text when it says, "For at least twenty minutes, she handed out the story. The youngest kids were soothed by her voice and everyone else saw visions of the Whistler running from the crime scene"(Zusak 381). This shows how Liesel calmed down the people with her powerful words.
