Galesburg Jr./Sr. High School
November Family Newsletter
Parents and Guardians,
Our staff has become very concerned with the increase in the number of aggressive behaviors among a small population of our students. We are also concerned with the general disregard to respect among the student population toward each other. As a result, we recently hosted a community forum at the Roland Hegg Fine Arts Center. The purpose of this event was to share data regarding incidences of troubling student behavior but to also provide the community with an opportunity to provide feedback on possible solutions to counter these behaviors. As a result, we have already started acting on some of the solutions. Members of the Galesburg community have volunteered time sitting with our s students at lunch to engage in positive conversations. Carl Sandburg College has sent members of Men of Distinction, and Women of Character to engage in conversations with our junior high students. We hope that this event was the start of a promising partnership with members of our greater school community. It is our goal to conduct additional community forums in the future.
Influence- Parents/Guardians continue to have the greatest influence on their student's behavior while attending school. We need your help! Please talk to your students about being kind and respectful toward their peers and their teachers. Talk to your students about the dangers of social media, and how social media can negatively influence behavior. Have conversations about not getting involved in the situations of other students. Let your student know that there are caring adults at our school that want to help. Together, we can do great things for your student.
Get Involved- Many times students say school is boring and that there is nothing to do. We have many opportunities in which a student can participate. We have the visual, musical, and theatrical arts. We have numerous clubs and after-school activities, such as interscholastic sporting programs. Finally, we have the 21st Century Program that meets daily after school. Students can receive homework help, as well as participate in enrichment activities like guitar club or photography club. So if your student is looking for something to do, have them give one of the many opportunities a try. Belonging to an activity tends to have a positive effect.
Attendance- We continue to express the importance of your student's attendance. Daily student attendance is vital for your student's success at school. Please help your student be successful by making sure they are present and on time every day. Remember, if your child is sick they should not come to school. Please contact the school office, at 309-973-2001 to report their absence.
Parking Pick-up Information
We would like to remind you of the student parking guidelines and parent/guardian drop-off & pick-up procedures. We have received complaints from local area businesses that student and parent/guardian cars are taking up spots at their locations. They have indicated to us that they will start having cars towed that are parked there while not utilizing their business.
It is asked that you refrain from parking in Dollar General’s parking lot as well as the funeral home across the street. While the parking lot at Galesburg Area Vocational Center on Fremont Street is district-owned, it is reserved for construction vehicles at this time.
Student Drivers: Park in the designated student parking lot. Once parked, please make sure your parking pass is displayed.
Parent/Guardian Pick-Up: Use the Dayton Street entrance and proceed to West Circle Drive.
We appreciate you using the designated areas for parking (students) and getting your student to and from school. Our hope is that we maintain good relationships with our business neighbors while keeping our students safe.
