The Buzz at Leeds

April 4, 2023

Message from Principal Wenz

Dear Leeds Caregivers,

As many of you know, it is budget season where the schools propose a budget to the School Committee members and once they approve it the budget is brought to the City Council for their review and vote. This year Leeds has been asked to cut approximately $95,000. In order to meet this and keep our class sizes smaller, we have proposed developing a grade 4 / 5 combination class for next year. Additionally, we have some retirements that will assist in the reductions. Our grade one paraeducator and our lunch monitor positions were funded through the ESSERs grant (Covid recovery funds). These grant funds are ending and we will not have those positions next year. This past week each school was asked to cut another $100,000. This will result in a reduction of Leeds' staff.

Here is a link to the up to date budget presentation that has already occurred. There is a Budget & Property subcommittee meeting tomorrow night @6:30pm via Zoom. Here is the link. As this is a subcommittee of the School Committee, there is no public comment. Although, in the agenda it states: "THE PUBLIC IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT WRITTEN TESTIMONY/COMMENTS AS THERE WILL BE NO IN-PERSON PUBLIC COMMENT AT THE APRIL 4, 2023 BUDGET AND PROPERTY SUBCOMMITTEE MEETING."

The School Committee will be voting on the final budget on Thursday, April 13.

With kindness,
Chris Wenz, Principal

Grade 4 & Kindergarten Visit Smith College Art Museum & Greenhouse

As part of our School Improvement plan, our students have been part of a year-long Visual Thinking Strategies curriculum, which engages students in academic conversation skills that make thinking visible and promotes an understanding of a variety of perspectives. As a culminating activity our students are visiting the Smith College Museum of Art and the Greenhouse. Grade 4 and Kindergarten students have completed their trips.

Project 351 in Partnership With Cradles to Crayons

March 20th-March31st

Ana-Lucia, an 8th grader at JFK was nominated to represent Northampton for Project 351, a non-profit youth-led, school-based movement for positive change. There are different service projects that we lead to help and impact other kids in need. For Project 351's spring service, ambassadors across the state will be hosting clothing drives in partnership with Cradles to Crayons. The impact of our drives will ensure that kids aged newborn to twelve who are experiencing clothing insecurity will feel comfortable and confident in the clothes they are wearing. The drive will run from March 20th-31st.
