Welcome Back to School!

Welcome back for the 2020-2021 school year! Whether you’re back face-to-face, hybrid, or virtual learning, the Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds team wants to keep you healthy and start the school year off right! Take a peek at some of our back to school tips to help you get back into the swing of things.

Breakfast: The Key to Growing Healthy

Getting back into a routine for school should include having a healthy breakfast. Studies show children who eat breakfast concentrate better, have higher test scores, and have better muscle coordination. Whether you’re utilizing school breakfast or eating at home, it’s important to have breakfast every day. Take a look at this link that gives a few healthy breakfast ideas to start your day off right.

Sleep and Health

Now that school is back in session, it is more important than ever to get back into a healthy sleep routine. Getting the right amount of sleep can help students to focus, increase concentration, and improve overall academic performance. For children ages 6-12, aim for 9-12 hours of sleep per night.

Here are some tips on how to overhaul your summer lack of sleep schedule

  • Set a regular bedtime and rise time, even on the weekends

  • Implement a “media curfew”-turn off all electronics before bedtime

  • Dim the lights! Even artificial lights or lights from technology can throw off your sleep

MyPlate

Back to school is the perfect time to make sure you’re fueling your body the MyPlate way. Try to eat from the five food groups for every meal.

  • Fruits-Focus on whole fruits

  • Vegetables-Vary your veggies

  • Proteins-Vary your protein routine

  • Grains-Make half your grains whole

  • Dairy-Move to low-fat or fat free milk and yogurt
