From the Teacher's Desk
Dr. Friend - Science
Greetings students and parents, the Forces and Motion post assessment was moved to Thursday and Friday, October 14th & 15th. Forces and Motion Study Guide is provided in Google Classroom to review for the assessment. I encourage parents to take a few minutes to review your child's grades in PowerSchool. Some students are missing assignments, which are affecting their overall grade. Please note a temporary zero is placed in PowerSchool; however, your child can still complete the assignment for a grade. The week of October 18th, we will be beginning our unit on Waves. If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

Mrs. Murray - Math
All students are given 10-15 minutes each day to complete iReady practice. At the beginning of the year students took an iReady Diagnostic test to determine skills needed to be successful in 8th grade. A customized pathway was created for each of them based on their diagnostic results.
Pre-Algebra
We have been working on Solving Equations. I was very proud of the students who took the test as it was clear most of them knew the correct process to solve an equation. What gave them the most trouble was adding and subtracting of Integers. We are spending time each week reviewing these basic skills to strengthen their mathematical abilities.
Algebra
We have finished our unit on Solving one- two and multi-step Equations. We have begun working on Linear equations, slope and writing equations of a line. For many students this is new material but they are doing a great job so far.
Mrs. Bland - Math
Mrs. Senich - ELA/English 1
In the regular 8th Grade ELA classes, we are focusing on vocabulary acquisition and usage as well as reading. Each student has chosen a book from the library to complete a book project. They get to choose from a list of 91 book projects so there is something that appeals to everyone.
English 1 is continuing to read To Kill A Mockingbird. We are working on vocabulary acquisition by learning new vocabulary from the book. Each chapter has associated words and the students are keeping a vocabulary log with a word web for each word they are assigned. We will be finishing the book in the next week or so and moving on to writing their research paper.
Ms. Lewis - Social Studies
Hello 8th Grade Parents! We are getting so close to our first report card, so please make sure that your child is staying on top of his/her assignments. Things have changed a little for this first semester with regards to material. We have noticed that our students need more instruction on vocabulary, so as a school we decided that social studies will teach out of the book, “Vocabulary for Success” on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We will also continue our regular lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The great thing about these vocabulary days is that they are lessons focused on Social Studies and these words will show up in our regular lesson, so they are getting a jump start to the material. If you have any questions please get in touch with me at klewis@gcsd.k12.sc.us or through my textnow app at 854-777-6179.
