SOAR Updates

Principal's Message

It has been a great week at SOAR High School! Students started their first week of college class(es) and the class of 2023 celebrated the start of their senior year at senior sunrise.

Meanwhile, to support student success at SOAR High School, I met with all our freshmen and sophomore AVID classes to review the student handbook. I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to engage with our students - they impress me everyday!

I have a few emails from those interested in participating on our School Site Council. Ballots will come out next week, along with my update, so if you're interested in getting involved or would like to know more, please reach out to me at wjohnston@avhsd.org.

Breakfast and Lunch

Are you missing out on lunch because of a college class conflict?

Food services is going to start serving during our 10:30 (M-R) in lieu of breakfast at 8:00am. It is our hope that this change will offer more students access to school meals. Lunch is served during the lunch period. If you have a conflict, let Ms. Schaeffer know in the front office, and we'll save a meal for you to pick up after class.

Safety First!

Please continue to be safe when dropping off and picking up your student from SOAR High School. There is not a designated drop off and pick up spot; however, the lots closest to SOAR are near the AVC Softball Stadium/Tennis Courts (E4 and E5 -- off of 32st Street West). This is causing a lot of congestion.

Students may be picked up or dropped off anywhere on campus. So, if you'd like to avoid some of the congestion, please consider meeting your student somewhere else on campus.

Please help us out by:

  • No parking/waiting in the loading zone or fire lane

  • No dropping off/picking up at a stop sign or in the roadway (we cannot hold up traffic in anyway and it is not safe)

  • Students can be picked up in the loading zone if they are out there waiting for their ride

  • Students can meet their ride in a parking spot (cars must be fulling stopped and in a parking space)

  • Students can meet their ride elsewhere on campus

  • Students must use the crosswalk to cross into the parking lot

Thank you for your help!

Student Illnesses

If you're student is feeling unwell, please DO NOT report to school. Stay home and email Jaylene Schaeffer at jschaeffer@avhsd.org to report the absence for SOAR High School.

Students must report the absence to their AVC college professor as well to avoid being dropped from the class.

On days when your college class is being held, students should be completing the COVID self screeing through the myAVC portal (https://www.avc.edu/node/3716).

Note: While you may continue to receive notice of postive cases on our campus, the CDC no longer requires asymptomatic close contacts to quarantine.

Wellness Corner

I had the pleasure of speaking with our freshmen and sophmores this week. We reviewed our student handbook as well as ways to be successful at SOAR High School.

The students shared that without good time managment, it can be difficult to be academically successful. So, here are some tips to better your time management:

1. Set reminders for all your tasks

2. Use your daily planner

3. Give each task a time limit

4. Block out distractions

5. Establish a routine

Be a STAR!

STUDENTS, don't forget to Be a STAR no matter where you are -- that's in the classroom, on campus, connected online, or in the community -- again, we're promoting Self advocating, Teachable, Accountable, and Respectful leaders -- STARs -- here at SOAR!

SOAR Stars are also life-long learners and self-advocates who solve the most pressing challenges through an unwavering pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and collaboration, becoming engaged and productive leaders in their communities.

STUDENT HANDBOOK

We ask that students and families please review our student handbook: https://www.soarhs.org/students/student-handbook

It's important that all members of the SOAR community are familiar with behavioral expectation, academic integrity policies, dress code, etc. Students will be getting a copy of the planner through AVID classes soon. Again, until then, we ask that you review our online version of this document.
