4th Grade Newsletter

February 16-19, 2016

Spring Pictures

We will have Spring Pictures next Tuesday. Your child should have received an order form today for group pictures-- they are $10 a piece, and that envelope needs to be returned no later than next Tuesday.

Each child will take individual spring pictures and then later you will receive a proof of the picture and decide then whether or not you want to order.

New Schedule!

Just a reminder... That as of last week 4th grade will no longer be switching classes. Your child will stay with their homeroom teacher each day. The homeroom teacher will teach all subject areas and will be responsible for all grade entered in Infinite Campus starting on the next report card.

We are doing this to gain instructional time and more specifically to gain some extra time for more math instruction! We are excited about the change and know that it will provide great results for your students! If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of us!

Non-Traditional Instructional Day (Snow Days)

Just a reminder about our new "Non-Traditional Instructional Days" (NTI days)... We all understand that this is a work in progress, and though we do not foresee any winter weather in the near future we just wanted to remind you about the procedure for them.

We have sent home a menu of educational activities that your child can complete at home in the event of snow days. Upon returning to school we will complete a written reflection of their learning! Please remember that the work we are doing this year with "non-traditional" days is all experimental and we are trying out different things to prepare for next year!

Here is a link which explains it very well from SCPS:

Jump Rope for Heart

The Jump Rope For Heart event will be held during your child’s PE class the week of February 22-26. During this time there will be several stations that the students will visit. If your child is collecting money it will be due no later than February 29th.

Yearbooks!

Yearbook order forms are available in the front office.

Did you know you can order a yearbook online? When you place your online order you should get a confirmation and then your child will receive their yearbook close to the end of the school year.

What's going on in the classroom?

Reading: On Tuesday we reviewed how to answer an extended response question. On Wednesday and Thursday students are completing an assessment over historical texts. On Friday we are going to do a "selfie" activity to preview our next reading unit!

Writing: We have begun our persuasive unit. Today we looked at the different reasons that we love ice cream in order to support our opinion.

Math: Fractions continue-- this week we are using fraction rods to make mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Science: Students are studying geo-technical engineers and are determining important factors to determine a good spot to build a bridge in Nepal. We are reading a fictional text that accompanies this and it is really engaging the students!
