Week 8, Term 1 2021 - 24 March 2021
Empower All People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners
Kia kaha - do your best * Kia māia - be courageous * Kia manawanui - have a heart
From our Principal
Kia ora koutou,
Learning @ Puketapu
It was great this week being able to walk around your learning spaces with our Rangatira team and see our akonga in their learning rhythm. I was really impressed with the Year 0-1 students and how their independent play learning was so rich with literacy and numeracy and with the way they cooperated and collaborated together. I have also been really pleased with how many of our students are receiving Values Certificates for their learning behaviours.
Year 6 Te Wera Camp & Year 4/5 Activity Week
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou to Nicole and the team for planning an awesome EOTC week for 133 akonga and 20 adults. This takes time and collaboration to do this and we appreciate the effort you go to for our kids to have these experiences. Have an awesome week and remember to wear clothes you never want to wear again in the mud run.
Principal Learning
This week I have travelled to Te Tairawhiti (Ruatoria & Gisborne) to look at schools and marae and talk to key leaders around how Māori are enjoying and achieving education success as Māori, as they develop the skills to participate in te ao Māori, Aotearoa and the wider world. This PLD for me is part of my leadership learning for the Ka Hikitia - Ka Hāpaitia - The Māori Education Strategy and Tau Mai Te Reo - the Māori Language in Education Strategy for all Learners which are major strategies of our Government and MoE in the future.
I have been granted leave by the Board of Trustees to attend my daughter's Year 8 camp to Forest Lakes Camp in Otaki next week. While I have been away on PLD trips in the 4.5 years I have been at Puketapu School, this is the first discretionary leave I have asked for in my time at our kura and I am very grateful to be given this opportunity to be a parent helper at my daughter's camp.

Wellness Space
Over the past two months, there has been building work and painting to create our schools new Wellness Space. We are looking for a Maori name for this area so will share that when we have it.
This space will be where our 24/7 Youthworker/Whanau Kaitiaki (Anya Poching), Literacy Support Teacher (Caro Den-McKay) and DP/SENCO (Corinne Sattler) are based.

We are working hard to make Hero our major form of communication from now on. If you haven't already downloaded the new app, please check it out.
Farewell to miss platts
Aoife (Miss Platts) will be leaving us at the end of Term 1. It has not been an easy decision for her to make, however she has decided to return to Christchurch to be with her partner and whānau.
Over the next two weeks, we will be advertising for a new Year 2/3 teacher and when we have made an appointment we will be communicating that decision with all the whanau of students in Totara 2.
New Gardener
If you see Sheryl out and about working, please say hi and welcome her to our school.
Rimu

French Toast Huhu Grubs
Today we have made french toast huhu grubs... but it is not actual huhu grubs...it is banana!
It was from the Kuwis Kitchen kiwi kids cookbook.
You need 4 slices sandwich bread, 1 banana ( quartered -sliced lengthwise and then in half), 1egg, 2 Tablespoons milk (or almond milk ) ,pinch of cinnamon, butter or coconut oil, to grease the pan.
1- Cut crusts off the bead and flatten each slice of bread with your hand.
2- Place 1/4 of a banana on the end of a slice of bread and roll it up.
3 - repeat until they are all filled and rolled up.
4 - In a bowl, whisk the egg, milk and cinnamon.
5 - Place the pan over a medium heat. add a little butter or oil.
6- Dip the rolls in the egg mix until coated.
7- place rolls in the pan, they will turn the rolls to cook on all sides, until golden brown.
Ava Allen, Kauri 2
Kauri Monday elective Carving class
This term we are working with Doug Keith to learn about Carving.
First we drew designs on paper of what we wanted and researched on the internet. Then we drew it onto the acrylic tile - this is a waste product from kitchen bench tops. We have started to cut this out. Once we have cut it and then we file it. We also have some resin that was wasted from a surf shop that we might use next.
Ngariki - it's fun and hands on.
Koda - its awesome because we actually get make something that we can keep
SPORTS
This week sees the last games of touch for the Term 1 competition. Well done to all our players, coaches, helpers and supporters. A huge thank you to Shane and Toni for their organisation again.
Touch Coaches: Coaches, please return all bags to the office asap
Sport Uniforms: Please return all touch uniforms clean and in great condition as soon as possible. Your account will be refunded $40 once it is returned.
Touch Fees:
If you haven't paid for your touch fees yet, please do so asap.
Hockey, Miniball, Basketball, Netball: COACHES/MANAGERS needed.
So far we have had no parents respond to emails regarding coaching. This is not a problem and we can still enter teams. This simply means parents will need to take a turn to coach/manage. each week. All of these codes provide support for coaches.
If you are thinking of putting your hand up but are uncertain about what the role entails please make contact via email ksowman@puketapu.school.nz or Facebook Messenger
Great smiling faces from last week at touch
Netball teams: Miss Sowman is waiting to hear from whanau in regards to coaching and managing teams before she is able to finalise teams and send them out to families. Everyone who registered is in a team but until we have coaches we cannot confirm who is in which team. If you are able to help, please let Miss Sowman know asap.
Below is the Future Ferns course which coaches and helpers should all attend if possible.
