Inside Scoop

Hockinson High School - 2022-2023

September 30, 2022

Dear Hawk Students, Families, and Friends:

It's Homecoming Week!

We have a big game tonight against Woodland and have a dance tomorrow night. We sold 470 tickets to the dance. 470! That may seem insignificant, but that breaks the record we set last year. It also represents more than two-thirds of our students. Show me a school putting up those types of numbers!

We had our first 9th grade mixer this week hosted by our 9th Grade Focus Teachers - Ms. Harteloo, Mr. Nelski, Mr. O'Neal, Mrs. Samwel, Mrs. Pershall, and Mr. McEnry. We want to continue to find ways to bring our new Hawks together. Today, they played games, listened to music, and had snacks together. We will do this monthly. If you are interested in helping, please let me know!

There is a lot information in the Scoop this week. I restocked on candy, so if you get through it all, you get one!

  • More information on the PSAT for Juniors
  • Homecoming Dance information
  • Class of 2023 information, including upcoming parent meetings, senior quotes, and senior pictures
  • Updates to athletic events
  • Band fundraising dinners
  • And more!

Have a great weekend. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me at tim.fox@hocksd.org.

Go Hawks!

PSAT Details

On October 12, 11th graders will be taking the PSAT, and it will be paid for by Hockinson High School.

Even if students don’t see college in their future, taking a test like the PSAT prepares them for the high-stakes testing they will most likely experience in their future.

Now more than ever, we need to prepare our students for the world they will walk into when they leave us.

We want to commit the time and money to ensure that students get this opportunity.

Students who take the PSAT as Juniors qualify for the National Merit Scholar Program. More on that below.

Students can pick up Student Guides in the ASB Office or Main Office. You can also follow the link below to the PSAT site for more information, including practice tests.

If your student is not interested in taking the test, please complete the PSAT Opt-Out Google Form before the end of the day on October 7.

National Merit Scholar Program - Commended Students

I am proud to announce that we have two students who are recognized as Commended Students in the PSAT/National Merit Scholar Program. Commended Students scored in the top 4% of all students who took the test.

How many students took the test in 2021?

1.3 million students!

Our Commended Students are:

Jackson Seal and Victoria Tsikayi

Congratulations!

Homecoming - October 1, 2022

The Homecoming Dance is on October 1, 2022 from 8-10pm.

The theme this year is "Dancing Through the Decades."

Homecoming is a nerve-racking night for me as an administrator and as a parent. I want our students to have fun. I want our students to be safe. We take security and student safety very seriously. If it has been detected that students are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they will not be let into the dance and parents will be contacted immediately.

We will follow school policy around drugs and alcohol. We want them to have a great time and make memories, but we will not sacrifice their safety to accomplish that. I have already spoken about this at our assembly on Wednesday. Please speak with your student about making good choices.

A huge congratulations to the cast of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow! More information to come.

Picking Up Students

When picking up students in the afternoon, please pull as far forward as possible toward the band room entrance. There is a tendency for cars to line up out onto 159th St and that prevents buses from being able to get through.

Also, please exit through the back gate on Parkinen. This ensures good flow of traffic at the main gate.

Closed Campus

Just a friendly reminder, as this is the same policy as last year.

We are a closed campus.

That means no leaving during lunch. Even if you try to come back to school with a coffee for me.
