From the Principal's Desk
Fall is a wonderful time of year to enjoy the leaves changing and the beginning of the holiday season. Stop, take a moment and breathe in the wonderful season and all your blessings. For this time will pass and this moment will never be again.
Cold weather should head our way within the next month...Please make sure you write your child's name in their jackets. This will help get it back to the child when found around campus.
As you read further you will see, November is going to be a busy month. Our teachers have put in a lot of extra time and effort to provide wonderful opportunities for our students. We love what we do and we are excited to have you come and share these events with us! Please mark your calendars. We are looking forward to having lots of folks in our building throughout this next month.
Thanks for entrusting us with your most precious gift,
Mrs. Stewart
Message From Your Assistant Principal...
The future of each child centers on a great academic foundation. This begins with good attendance…BUT they have to there to receive the instruction! Attendance doesn’t just include being present, it means being on time. The doors at Rice open at 7:30 am and the front doors will lock at 8:00...you will have to walk your child in to check them into school after 8:00. When students arrive late, it is a struggle for them to do their best in class. Here are a few ways you can meet your goal of getting your student to school each day AND on time:
- Early bed time (take a look at a previous post on our Rice Facebook page to get a good idea of a sensible bedtime for your student)
- Wake up with plenty of time so no one is rushing around the house…this can cause unwanted stress (for everyone)
- Have your student eat breakfast at school….our delicious and nutritious breakfast begins at 7:30am
- Leave with enough time to fight possible rain or traffic
- Don’t let your child stay home unless they are truly sick…BUT please keep them home if they are ill…we don’t want them to come spread those germs.
- If your child seems anxious and doesn’t want to come to school, email your child’s teacher to ask advice on how to make them more comfortable.
- Make sure your child gets enough exercise…this keeps them healthy AND will have them going to bed earlier. Limit computer/device/TV time!
If you have any questions regarding attendance, feel free to contact us or see the Conroe ISD handbook.

Message From School Counselor...
Dear Parents,
October was a great month! We enjoyed celebrating Red Ribbon Week and building the foundation to living a drug free life. Students were excited to participate in each day’s activity and learn how to make positive healthy choices for themselves with each day’s discussions. We are so proud of the decisions our students make each day and thank you for building that foundation for them!
Nominations are now open for Conroe Independent School District Gifted and Talented program. Although the testing will not take place until February, nominations are accepted at this time. Nominations can be made by the parents and/or teachers. It is recommended that parents of 2nd grade students wait until CogAT scores have arrived before nominating their child because CogAT scores are part of the GT assessment. If you are interested in nominating your child, you may want to discuss this with your child’s teacher at conferences. Nominations will be accepted through December 18. You may request a nomination form from the front office or the Counselor. You can also find the nomination form and other GT information on the CISD GT homepage.
Also this month we will celebrate Generation Texas Week during the week of November 17-21. In the past we knew this week as Education Go Get It Week., and we will focus on promoting high school education and higher education to our students. Each day we will have a topic to discuss with our students including the transitions from elementary to future schools, 4-year colleges, trade schools, college tuition, and more. It is important that our students understand how their education today can impact their future.
Thanks for all you do in supporting our kids!
Mrs. Orr
Pre-K
This year we have worked on following directions, recognizing name, writing name, recognizing letters, and letter sounds in language arts. In math, we have focused on identifying numbers 1-5, identifying shapes, and counting to 15. Please review these with your child at home.
Please check your child’s folder and backpack daily and remove all papers!
Just a reminder:
· Write your child’s name on coats and backpacks.
· Keep a clean change of clothes in your child’s backpack.
· If you need to change transportation, please do so in writing.
· Read to your children daily!

First Grade
Welcome Fall!!
Thank you to all of you who have scheduled and attended your Parent Teacher conference! If you have not had yours yet, please schedule one with your child's teacher! We will go over many different things that can help your child succeed!
In math, we will be focusing on Addition and Subtraction within 10. It is always helpful to us if you are practicing counting forwards and backwards from 120 to 0. Identifying coins is also a great at home math skill to work on! Some adding strategies to help move your child might include you saying a number and your child saying how many more is needed to get to 10. For example, if you have 3 slices of pie, you need 7 more to get to 10 slices of pie!
In social studies, we will be focusing on Levels of Government and the voting process! We will also be learning about different cultures and Thanksgiving celebrations.
Your scientist will be introduced to Movement of Objects, magnets, and Day and Night! Have you peeked at the moon lately? What else is in the sky at night?
For reading, our main focus will include solving HARD and TOUGH words by NOT giving up and using all the strategies we have in our tool box! Ask your child about the Super Secret Detective Agency! Please read to your child nightly and practice their sight words.
Our words are powerful! We are wrapping up our opinion writing and will move into How To writing!
We look forward to Fall weather, please keep an extra pair of clothes and a jacket in your child's backpack! If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher!
Second Grade
Third Grade
Happy Fall! This month in math, we are going to be working on multiplication and division. We will represent and solve multiplication and division in a variety of ways including: repeated addition, arrays, area models, and skip counting on number lines. The students are very excited to start this new unit. You may help them at home by asking them to solve a problem using one of the ways they are learning in class.
In Science, we will start exploring the Sun and the Solar System. This is always a favorite topic with the students. In Social Studies, we will start talking about the Government and Elections. We will also dive into Culture: Customs, Celebrations and Traditions.
In Reading, your students will be finding out clues to solve mysteries in our new Mystery Unit, which will build on our fiction skills from the beginning of the year. Your writers will be celebrating their growth of informational writing and beginning to create imaginative stories!
Fourth Grade
Wow! October is over and Turkey Day is sneaking up on us. Our boys and girls have been working diligently on all their work.
Our study of multiplications with whole numbers will be represented in various ways including strip diagrams, input and output tables, partial products, arrays, and equations. Students will continue to practice graphing, rounding, and using compatible numbers. We will focus on multiple-step story problems in math this month.
Our "scientists" will be investigating force, gravity, and friction with many experiments.
If you would like to know anything about our state's regions, you could certainly ask our students. Learning about how our local, state, and federal government works will be the next course of study in social studies.
Lots of writing and reading activities are happening in the Language Arts classes. We will continue learning about opinion writing this month. How to find information, summarize, and find the main idea in a reading passage are just some of the strategies we've been working on.
PLEASE HELP US BY MAKING SURE YOUR CHILD IS COMING TO SCHOOL EASHC DAY! Attendance is VERY IMPORTANT! WE APPRECIATE IT!
From The Library ...Ms. Parks
Thank you to all our students and families that participated in our annual storybook pumpkin patch! The pumpkins were so very creative which made it very hard for our judges to pick our winners!
Students have been visiting the library and learning about searching for books using the B.B. Rice Catalog. Students can search for books several different ways: they can search by title, they can enter one or two words for a keyword search or they can search for award winning books. Students are learning how their library is organized and how to access information efficiently.
Please encourage reading at home. As your child’s reading comprehension improves, they will be more successful in all aspects of their learning.
