Scholarships for Students with Disabilities
Did you know- there are scholarships available for students with disabilities who want to go to college! This resource was created by Think College to help families and others locate scholarship money to help pay for college. There are scholarships listed that any student is eligible for, and many that are for students with specific disabilities. The information included in this document is up-to-date as of February 2024 and is reviewed/updated annually.
Supported Decision Making
As young people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) approach adulthood, families have a difficult decision: Should I pursue guardianship for my child? Supported Decision-Making is an alternative to guardianship focused on the practice of self-determination. It mirrors how all adults make decisions by recognizing that people with I/DD have the right to make their own decisions about their lives with support from family, friends, and trusted individuals.
The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council created a resource designed for all people, that recognizes their uniqueness and individuality and helps them, their families, and those who support them, throughout their lifespan to make decisions: Supported Decision-Making Toolkit
The "Your Choice, Your Life" video posted below explores the concept of Supported Decision-Making in greater detail. More information about Supported Decision Making and other forms of guardianship can be found on the "Guardianship/Supported Decision Making" tab of the Transition Trends blog.
