Grade 8 Future Cities Project
Grade 8 gifted support students participated in the annual Future City Competition - Greater Philadelphia Chapter on January 30th. They were tasked with designing a city of the future, only this time on the Moon! The students had to research and present what life would be like on the moon, what natural elements could be sourced and used to sustain life, as well as planning additional futuristic elements that have not even been imagined yet. They planned, wrote an essay, all built separate model sections, made a video presentation, and interviewed with dozens of engineers via zoom about their city, Moon Cocoon.
In the end the Murray Avenue walked away with two awards for their incredible design elements. The first award, “Future World Vision,” was presented to Murray Avenue from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Philadelphia Section, and the second award, “Best Civil Engineering Design,” was presented by Urban Engineers. Murray Avenue’s complex futuristic dome technology gained them this recognition from the Civil Engineering chapters.

Celebrating National School Counseling Week, Feb. 1–5, 2021
National School Counseling Week 2021, “School Counselors: All in for All Students,” sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 1–5, 2021, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
School counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, postsecondary and social/emotional development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.

If you own a business or work for a company in the state of Pennsylvania, now is the time to act. Through Education Tax Improvement Credit Program, businesses can donate up to $750,000 each year to EITC-eligible organizations, and then claim 75 percent of that donation as a credit that offsets their state tax bill.
