A Look Back at the Week!
Autumn Celebrations: Halloween
Happy October! Fall is here, which means there are Autumn celebrations. Winston Campus Elementary will be celebrating Halloween on Monday, October 31 in the afternoon, classroom instruction will be occurring in the AM.
Our students will participate in our traditional Halloween parade and classroom parties (pre-COVID!). The Winston Elementary parade is scheduled to start around 12:30 pm with the classroom parties to follow. Food is not permitted at classroom parties. Parents can view the parade as the route will travel outside the building weather permitting. Students will be exiting the building through the B wing doors on North Babcock Drive and walking around the large soccer/baseball fields and re-enter the front of the school. Spectators are not permitted inside the building (Only pre-approved room parents that will be volunteering for classroom parties at 12:30 will be allowed into the building and must be checked in at our front office).
Please kindly take a moment to review our expectations as we plan for this year's Halloween celebration!
Students are encouraged to bring/wear a costume to school that can easily be put on/off over their clothing. Students are not encouraged to be signed out to change into costumes. Please review and follow the below guidelines when choosing a costume this year. Comfort is always key as well!
Page 22 - Parent/Student Handbook
Per the Student Handbook: Students are permitted to wear costumes on Halloween as long as their attire complies with the above student appearance policy and meets the following set of expectations for a school setting:
Children should not wear bloody, gruesome, or especially scary costumes. Costumes involving fake blood are not allowed.
Actual weapons, look-alike weapons, toy weapons or weapon-like objects are not allowed.
Masks that cover the face and head are not allowed.
Costume make-up is allowed provided it does not cover the student’s entire face. Staff members must be able to identify students.
Costumes that could be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype about someone’s culture, gender, heritage or religion are not allowed.
Costumes should follow our school dress code.
Halloween parties will begin immediately following the parade. As in the past, for safety reasons, we are only allowing pre-arranged parent volunteers into the school to help assist with the classroom parties. If you are a parent volunteer for a classroom party, you must stop by school at some point during the week of October 24 to have your ID scanned with our Raptor Security System. All volunteers will get a scanned ID sticker when you check in for the Halloween activities on Thursday, October 31. If you have previously had your ID scanned this school year, you do not need to come into the office prior to the event. We have your information saved in our system. All volunteers as well as parade watchers are to park in the church parking lot or on the side streets. Please do not park in coned off church parking spots. You may be ticketed. Parking is always very limited at Winston Campus. Please try to walk to school if possible!
We are aware that some families do not celebrate Halloween or Fall Festivities. If you wish for your child to not participate in the parade or festivities, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Thank you for your continued support! We are so happy to celebrate fall festivities with our students who deserve some extra fun!
I want to wish all Winston families a happy and safe Halloween. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Kindest Regards,
Marilynn Smith and Jack Olson
Principal and Assistant Principal
WCE PTA: Reflections Art Program
National PTA has a long-standing commitment to arts education. The Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life. Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. This 50+ year-old program helps them explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.
This year’s Reflection them is: Show Your Voice / ¡Hazte Escuchar!
Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories:
Dance Choreography
Film Production
Literature
Music Composition
Photography
Visual Arts
Students participate in the appropriate division for their grade:
Primary (Pre-K - Grade 2)
Intermediate (Grades 3-5)
Middle School (Grades 6-8)
Special Artist (All grades welcome)
WCE entries are due Friday, October 28.
The PTA will host the Reflections Exhibit and Reception on Thursday, November 3, 5:30-7:00pm in the Winston Library. At this event we will celebrate all student participants and recognize the winners from each category.
