Panther Post
February 19th - February 24th
Hello Lopez Families,
Friday morning started off interesting. I was going through the drive through at Whataburger up on the hill and when I tried to pay the cashier, he said the car in front of me already paid. I don't know if it was a parent who saw me, or if it was because of the Random Acts of Kindness week, but whatever it was, it made my day. Thank you to whoever it was. Then I walked down to the student drop-off line and had to chase a dog around the grounds. We finally caught the dog and got it back to the owners safely. That got my day rolling!
Last Tuesday was one of my favorite nights of the year when we have our talent show. This year we had a ton of performances and they were all so good. I can't believe how much talent we have here. Pictured below is Carl Robinson who performed a rap song that he wrote himself. It was impressive. Unfortunately that was my only picture that came out good.
I want to thank the PTA for all they do. This week for instance, they fed the teachers and gave us these cool cups you see below. Thank you so much!
Have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wernli

LEAD
Begin With the End in Mind. When students begin with the end in mind, they have a personal direction to guide their daily activities. Without some sort of direction, they may not accomplish what is needed. Beginning with the end in mind is part of the process of personal leadership, taking control of our own lives.
When you think about it, all things we do are created twice. Teens create them first in their minds, and then they work to bring them into physical existence. If teens would Visualize/write out the idea they would be taking the first step in controlling and being responsible for the outcome. Example: x to y by when. Run in the Autism Awareness Run--I will be able to run a 5k in under an hour by the Autism Awareness Run 2018 by exercising 30 min. 5 times a week.

Lopez Drama
Lopez Middle School will present Triangle by Laurie Brooks on Wednesday February 21 at 6:30 pm in the Lopez cafetorium. This play is Lopez’s entry to the NEISD UIL One Act Play Contest to be held at Eisenhower MS 8231 Blanco Rd to be held on Saturday,February 23, Lopez performs at 3pm.
In lieu of ticket sales for the performance at Lopez on 2/21 the cast & crew is requesting donations to the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition http://rememberthetrianglefire.org/resources/ Contest admission at Eisenhower is free.
About the play: Set against the backdrop of the historic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911, this stylistically thrilling play explores the immigrant experience then and now through the tragedy of the "fire that changed America." Sophie, a 16-year-old seamstress who died in the fire, haunts Malena, a modern Hispanic girl who is in conflict with her sister, Isabel. Sophie is filled with guilt because she did not save her sister, Rose, from the fire and now cannot find her. When Sophie, along with the ghosts of other dead factory girls, appears to her, Malena encourages Sophie to tell her story, never imagining that they will all be transported back in time to relive the tale. An ensemble of actors portrays the ghosts of those who died in the fire and seamlessly takes on individual roles in Sophie's story. Sophie has arranged a job at the Triangle factory for Rose to keep her from running the streets with a gang of rowdy boys. But now Sophie owes the foreman, Mr. Jake, a favor. He demands that Sophie spy on the union organizers, who are her friends. If she refuses, Sophie and her sister will be fired and blacklisted. Sophie, unaware that her sister is in love with Max, meets him one night at a dance, and they fall in love. Already angry at Sophie for making her work at the Triangle, Rose discovers this relationship and, in her anger, lies, telling Max that Sophie has "traded favors" with other men. Max, crazed with anger and jealousy, rejects Sophie who, alone and afraid of losing her job, decides the only way out is to give up her dreams and marry Louis, a successful man she doesn't love. Then someone strikes a match and there is a fire … In this tale of regret, responsibility and forgiveness, Sophie reveals her terrible secret and finds peace while helping Malena see her sister in a new light. Triangle by Laurie Brooks was commissioned and premiered by the School of Theatre and Film at Arizona State University.
9th Annual Ian's Cup
Ian's Foundation was formed in memory of Ian Fincke who tragically passed away at the age of 16, in October of 2008 as the result of fatal wounds sustained during a skateboarding accident. Ian was a previous student at Hardy Oak Elementary, Barbara Bush Middle School and both Reagan and Johnson High Schools. The foundation was formed to advance the safety and welfare of San Antonio youth through education and scholarship awards. To date over $40,000 in scholarships has been awarded. Ian's Foundation also promotes helmet safety in the San Antonio and surrounding area and supports STRAPS (South Texas Regional and Paralympic Sports). STRAPS was inspired by Ian's Foundation as a way to allow anyone in San Antonio with physical disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the game of soccer. You can read more about the foundation at www.IansFoundation.org.
We will be offering our annual spring soccer clinic for the San Antonio youth as one of our major fundraisers for the Ian's Cup scholarship fund. The clinic will be held on Sunday, March 4th at the Mays YMCA from 2-4PM (with registration from 1:30-2:00) The cost of the clinic is $30 if pre-registered and $35 the day of the clinic. It will include a 2hr clinic as well as a 2018 Ian's Cup t-shirt. The deadline for t-shirt pre-orders and pre-registration for the soccer clinic to ensure a 2018 Ian's Cup t-shirt the day of the clinic is Sunday, February 18th but pre-registration for the clinic will remain open through Saturday, March 3rd at 6PM. Trainers will include local high school coaches, club trainers and high school soccer players from Johnson and Reagan, as they must volunteer at one of the foundation's community service events to be eligible for a scholarship. You can read more about the events at www.IansCup.org.
