The Longfellow Library Program
It is the goal of the Longfellow Library Program to help students develop enthusiasm for reading, learn to find materials in our library, and learn to locate, use, evaluate and communicate information. Sara Harvey, our library secretary, and I are excited and grateful for our beautiful new space.
Each class has a scheduled library time once per week (Kindergartners also meet with me for a second library session each week). We will explore many types of literature by diverse authors and illustrators. Class discussions encourage students to think and talk about books and writing.
Library books may be checked out for two weeks. Materials may be renewed as needed unless they have been reserved by another patron. We do not charge fines for overdue materials, but students must return or renew overdue materials before checking out more. A replacement cost is charged for lost or damaged materials. Each 1st-6th grade student is allowed four books out at a time (Kindergarteners may have two books out). We always tell students that the library books belong to THEM, but they must be shared. A lost book is a book that another student cannot read, and that is sad for everyone. But additionally, the most important thing in this library is the students, not the books. Everyone loses things sometimes, and we are more than willing to work with a student or family if covering the replacement cost for a book is not possible.
Aside from literature lessons and checkout, 3rd-6th graders will focus on locating, evaluating, and using information during extra sessions scheduled throughout the year as needed to support school projects. We have access to excellent databases and software resources to help students conduct research and create projects. Evaluating information has certainly taken on increasing importance in the library curriculum since I began in this field ten years ago.
If you have questions about the Library Program or are interested in volunteering, please contact me. Your ideas and assistance will help us provide the best for our students. Our goal is to help students become competent and enthusiastic readers and learners for life!

Before and After School Routes
We really appreciate your patience and every day we are getting quicker and smoother at the morning and afterschool routes.
Parking spaces are at a minimum and so I encourage all students who need to be dropped off to use the carline route. Carline is for students who (before and after school) will get dropped off by parents and picked up by parents (that are not parking and getting out of the vehicles).
If your child is getting picked up after school by carline, they will go to the gym and staff will call them by their name to exit the North doors. Please have your yellow sheet in your car window so we know who to call out to carline in a timely manner.
Students who are getting picked up (by parents that park on the street and walk to pick up student) or students who are walking/riding bikes home will exit out of their team doors.
KEY (before and after school program) will enter and exit from the North door.
Only parents/students who need to visit the office will enter the main (west side) door.
Reminder- students should not arrive before 7:45 am.- there is no supervision before this time.
Breakfast is served from 7:30-7:50 and those students eating breakfast that are not in the before and after school program will enter through the North door as well.
