Coming Up This Week...
Reading-To accompany our science unit on fossils, we will be reading a fun story in our Harcourt books entitled, Dinosaurs Travel. We will also be reading other informational text on fossils and dinosaurs. We will be working on how to retell a fictional piece and an informational piece. We will be working on author's purpose and using context to figure out the meaning of unknown words.
Spelling-changing from singular to plural (shelf-shelves)
Writing-In Writer's Workshop this week, we will be writing information pieces on geology. The focus will be on both sentence and paragraph development.
Science-We will be learning all about fossils. I am hoping that we will have the chance to make our very own fossils.
Math-We will be finishing up Topic 10 (Place Value to 1000) this week...ahead of schedule! The topic 10 test will be on Thursday. This test will cover writing numbers in expanded form, comparing numbers, ordering numbers, counting by 5s, 10s and 100s, problem solving by finding a pattern, and subtracting tens and hundreds mentally. I am so impressed with their ability to think and make mathematical connections when learning new concepts! They have such a wonderful number sense!
Helpful Website-Khan Academy
This is a great site for help with math (and other subjects) for students of all ages (especially for upper elementary, middle school and high school) I used it all the time with my fifth graders and my own daughters. There are great videos to help students (and parents) understand mathematical concepts. Our next topic involves adding and subtracting three digit numbers. Try this site if your child is struggling with the concept or if you just want to give your child a head start.
Thank you so much for all your support with the Olathe Foundation's Major Saver Card Campaign!
