Important Message About Bike Safety

Now that spring has sprung and the weather is getting nicer out, more students are riding bikes to school. This is just a friendly reminder to students that if you ride your bike to school, please be sure to lock it up on one of the bike racks so it doesn't wander off during the day.

A Note From the Health Office

The end of the school year is fast approaching! If your student has medications in the Health Office (daily medications, inhalers, EpiPens, etc.), please make arrangements with the Health Office (651-621-6604 OR jennifer.bakeberg@moundsviewschools.org, corrah.hintz@moundsviewschools.org) to collect them by the end of the day on Thursday, June 8. Any medication remaining in the Health Office after June 8th, the last day of school, will be disposed of properly.

Let's Talk About It: May is Mental Health Awareness Month

While mental health is important to address year-round, Mental Health Awareness Month provides a dedicated time for people, organizations and communities to join their voices to broadcast the message that mental health matters. As a parent/caregiver, it could be an opportunity to begin a conversation about mental health with your child. We invite you to read this month’s blog together with your child or watch this short video and then lean in and listen with curiosity to their thoughts and feelings about mental health, self-care, getting help and supporting others.

RESOURCES

Know the Facts: Mental Health

Over 80 percent of young people ages 10–18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink. Send a clear and strong message that you disapprove of underage drinking and use or misuse of other drugs. Talk. They hear you. Read April’s mental health blog post about the topic here.

Don’t Risk a Gap in Your Health Insurance

Have you moved in the past three years or will you be moving soon? If you have Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, please update your contact information. It’s important so we can reach you when it’s time to renew your health insurance. Visit mn.gov/dhs/mycontactinfo.

This can be found in other languages here: https://mn.gov/dhs/mycontactinfo/communications-toolkits/.

Discounted Internet

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) provides eligible households a discount of up to $30 per month off their internet bills (or up to $75 per month for households living on Tribal lands), as well as a one-time discount of up to $100 off an eligible connected device like a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. In many cases, households can get high-speed internet entirely free by choosing a fully covered internet plan. A household is eligible to participate if a child in the household qualifies for Educational Benefits, which includes free or reduced-price school meals. If you need proof that a child in your household qualifies, contact Nutrition Services. Learn more and apply here.

Let's Talk About It: Caregivers, The First Line of Defense

As a caregiver, never underestimate your power to influence a child’s future. Read this month’s blog post about how adult behaviors can sometimes influence children’s behavior, and how this relates to Alcohol Awareness Month.

Bus Safety

We have noticed several bus behaviors that do not reflect our values here at Edgewood. We work with American Transportation to ensure that students and drivers have an enjoyable experience. Our message to students and families is riding the bus is a privilege, not a right. If negative interactions occur, a meeting with administrators, parents, and students will happen to discuss the next steps. We hope never to have such a meeting. Parents, please work in partnership with us by reiterating our expectations regarding transportation. Students are to remain seated while the bus is in motion—no food or beverages on the bus. We are respectful to other individuals and follow the bus driver's directions. We appreciate your support in keeping all students respectful and safe.
