Happy New Year!

Monday-Welcome back and Happy 2016! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! We are onward to a wonderful year full of fun and learning. Today, we worked on remember school routines and interviewing our friends about their winter breaks. We had an enjoyable time watching snow fall at two different times during the day! Students made a snowman scramble and created a snowman glyph. What a fun first day back to school!

Tuesday-As the second nine weeks is finishing, we are needing to do assessments. We will have reading and math assessments to complete before next week. Our book buddies came for a fun visit. We had a chance to interview them about New Year Resolutions. It was very fun being able to talk with our buddies. For our weekly guidance lesson, the term "tattle tongue" was introduced. Students were taught the difference between tattling and reporting. During writing, we wrote about our favorite things we do in the month of January. We had ideas from throwing snowballs to drinking hot cocoa. During our laptop time, we visited Raz Kids. Please feel free to continue to do Raz Kids at home.

Wednesday-Today we started our Rigby reading assessments. This is an individual reading assessment given to each student. Students are given books to read and then questions to answer. You will find out your child's Rigby reading level with your child's report card. We are also beginning to talk about winter and the changes the winter weather brings. We read a fun book called The Snowman by Raymond Briggs. This book has no pictures in it and we had to create the story based on the pictures. It was very exciting!

Thursday-In math, we are beginning to talk about shapes. Students are learning the differences between shapes. We will also begin discussing the differences between 2D and 3D shapes. During literacy, we practiced spelling sight words using the iPod apps like Spelling Magic 1, Spelling Magic 2, and Montessori Words.

Friday-We continued to do our reading assessments today. We also learned a lot about penguins! Our non-fiction Let's Find Out was all about penguins. Please ask your child to tell you all about what they learned. Students even learned about main idea and supporting details. They worked very hard! Please feel free to check out the fun games on the online Let's Find Out resources.
