PUMA VIDEO
Hello Puma Families!
This week you will be able to view your child’s progress in learning during COVID. You will notice a new category labeled - Distance Learning. This category will list the progress your student is making on identified skills and standards. This category will also be listed under Term 4. Term 3 does not have an overall grade listed, however, if you ‘click’ on the box, you will be able to see all the assignments used to calculate the ‘grade’. Last week in the Puma Prints we outlined how this progress will be reported.
Above Standard (AB) - Indicates the student has demonstrated a strong understanding of the standards that have been taught.
At Standard (AT) - Indicates the student has demonstrated an understanding of the standards that have been taught.
Below Standard (BE) - Indicates the student has demonstrated an understanding that is approaching the standard, (still passing), but they don’t have a complete understanding of the standards and concepts submitted so that the student may receive an “At Standard” or “Above Standard” grade.
* Asterisk - Indicates the student hasn’t provided the evidence needed to the teacher to assess the student’s understanding of the standard. Students who received an *Asterisk will be given a plan that will indicate the standards and associated work that will need to be submitted so that the student may receive an "at standard" or "above standard" grade.
For any high school course that is taught at the middle school (Algebra, Geometry, Spanish)
the students’ performance will be graded using the grading system that is being used at Monroe High School.
As always - if you have questions about what you see in Skyward please contact your child’s teacher first.
Also, starting May 11th, engagement will now be tracked in Skyward. Your student has MULTIPLE ways to engage through their learning; attending Zoom sessions, attending office hours, attending Puma Time’s or other small groups, completing and digitally submitting their assignments (including iReady), discussing their learning over the phone etc. If your child does NOT engage with us regarding their learning for a particular class - they will be marked UNENGAGED for the week. This attendance is recorded weekly on Monday - for the previous week.
Lastly, the Park Place Learning Schedule will change over the weeks of May 18th and May 25th due to the four day Memorial Day Weekend. Please view this schedule in the link above or below in this newsletter.
We continue to miss all our students here at Park Place. Please continue to reach out with any questions or concerns.

THANK YOU PTO
upcoming hiv instruction
Dear Park Place Middle School families,
This letter is to remind you that we make health education a priority in our district. Students in grades 5 through 12 will learn information, as required by law, about the risks of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS. This instruction will be made available on your teacher’s classroom page during the week of June 8th for participating students.
This year, to minimize the educational burden on families, we are utilizing short videos approved by the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in place of our comprehensive human growth and development curriculum. Please consider that in the absence of this curriculum, the medically and scientifically accurate information presented in these videos, although age-appropriate, may introduce terms or concepts your student may not have had the opportunity to learn about yet.
We encourage you to review the video appropriate to your student’s grade level, as you have the right to opt your child out of participating. Please select a website link below to review the content for your grade:
- 5th grade: Marissa’s Story | Discussion Guide
- 6th -8th grade: Understanding HIV/AIDS
- 9th-12th grade: HIV - How to Protect Yourself and Others, STD Prevention - Beyond Condoms, Living with HIV, Understanding Sexual Consent and the Law
By law, parents must attest to reviewing this content before they can excuse their child from HIV prevention education. If, after reviewing the content, you intend to excuse your child from viewing the HIV prevention education videos, please fill out the opt-out form and return it to your child’s teacher via email no later than May 29, 2020.
Even if you choose not to have your child participate in this learning program, recognize that students tend to talk about this content with one another, and your child will likely receive second-hand information from their peers. Previewing the curriculum in advance will help you respond to any questions your child may have.
Due to social distancing requirements, this online review of content takes the place of our annual parent preview night. If you opted your student out of the HIV Prevention Education curriculum in the Fall, you will still need to review and opt-out of this content because it is different from the full curriculum material you previously reviewed.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Terry Cheshire, Principal
Kristie Hilson, Assistant Principal
Joel Garrison, Assistant Principal
