Independent Small Group Activities
In order for independent work time to be effective, activities should be chosen that reinforce skills taught during whole group instruction. These activities should be meaningful and not just “busy work”. They should be changed as new skills are taught to allow different practice opportunities.
Before we share some ideas for independent centers, we would like to review evergreen games. Evergreen activities are activities that can be used with any words or concepts. A benefit of using these types of activities is that once you’ve taught the rules for the activity, you can just swap out the words or concepts without having to reteach the activity. Another benefit is that you have less to prepare and plan for during small group rotations. Evergreen activities are also easier to create differentiated practice for your different groups of students.
Here are some evergreen activity ideas:
Vocabulary:
Morphology:
Go Fish with affixes/roots
Matching game with affixes and their definitions (this can be done 1st-5th grades). Write affixes and/or roots on index cards and their matching definitions on another index card. Students play the game by turning over 2 cards and students try to match the morpheme with its definition. The student with the most matches wins. They could even use the sheet attached to “Go Fish” as their scoring sheet.
Foundational Skills:
Students should be writing the words rather than cutting and gluing words
Partner Phoneme Grapheme Mapping
Fluency:
Read last week’s text with a partner/SeeSaw

DoJo Communications
Please send out the following communications:
1. Content Area concepts being taught - share out a video link for math
2. Rally - Monday, Feb. 10 - wear House Shirts
3. Remind parents of the Bulldog Notebook Checks/Expectations
Next Theme: The Golden Rule - treating others as you want to be treated - RESPECT. For each act of Respect, students will earn a DoJo Point and once they reach 5 Respectful DoJo points they will receive a "Rule"r snap bracelet! This focus will also lend itself nicely to teaching our students respect is also shown when people look at people that are speaking to them and respond accordingly.
Tasks Needing your Attention:
1. Monster Stats for your chosen student - need by Thursday - be sure to secretly invite their parent to attend the Rally
2. DoJo Communications
3. Take Friday to get grades completed and input, tidy up rooms (refresh, organize....)
4. Get Hafey your math time (as a few of the schedules have changed) for Wednesday - that way I can build a schedule for Mary - observe/debrief time - I need this information by mid Monday
Parent Teacher Conferences...
Another opportunity to strengthen the relationships between school and home! Things to think about to bring into the conference:
**Always start with the positives
**Student Goals
**Student Work Samples
**End with areas that their child needs extra support in
**DoJo information for those VERY FEW that aren't signed up yet....
Really strive to keep the time - if you have a parent that is wanting more time - then just end the conference and do a follow up meeting. If you have a timer - set it - this will help you and the parent!
