Mrs. McGeorge's Super Second Grade
Week of January 4, 2016
What We're Learning
Just like at the start of the year, after long breaks like winter break and spring break, we have a behavior "boot camp." Our entire school will be practicing what it looks like and sounds like in various situations and areas in our building. We will pepper these lessons in throughout our days this week and next. By reviewing these behavior expectations now, we will save instructional time later. Thank you for supporting your child's learning and behavior in school.
Much of our reading and writing time this week will be dedicated to reviewing expectations for Reading Workshop and reviewing those important skills we learned first semester. We will also be starting a new unit in reading and writing non-fiction. We talk the characteristics of non-fiction and the differences between non-fiction and fiction.
We are starting a new unit in graphing this week! We will discuss data and reading tables and line plots this week. We are also starting a new RTI unit this week on place value. This is a time when second graders are dividing by ability level for a certain standard and are given extra instruction to support them in a way tailored more closely to their needs for that specific topic.
In Other News...
- Six Flags Read to Succeed packets went home the week of Thanksgiving with an opportunity for your child to read and earn a free ticket to St. Louis' Six Flags park. If you need a new packet, please let me know. If your child would like to participate, his/her packet must be returned by March 1.
- Thank you to all families who sent in Box Tops second quarter--we turned in over 100 labels! Moreau Heights collects Box Tops, Labels for Education, My Coke Rewards, and more. We appreciate your help!
- Please make sure your child brings a jacket or coat on cold days; and gloves, mittens, hats, etc. are welcome as well. Please try to label your child's belongings so that in the event they get misplaced, they can find their way back to you. We have outdoor recess unless it is raining/snowing or the temperature is below 20 degrees.
