A TCU financial aid officer once said in a Paying for College seminar, "Students should apply for at least 20 scholarships." Sure, it is not easy, but it pays off (pun intended). Also it is recommended that you make a name for yourself, in a good way, with the intended college. Contact their financial aid office and their admissions department. Let them know you plan to attend and that you are seeking financial assistance to make it happen.
There is a common myth that high schools or school districts award scholarships to top performing students. Wouldn't it be awesome if we had the funds to reward all the students who work hard to achieve their goals? However, we do have the ability to coach or mentor students on how to access or apply for scholarships. The high school counseling center and the Go Center at each campus provide resources to students so that they have direction on where and how to apply. The Go Center mentors will also walk students/families through the application process. The one thing we always tell students is, "They cannot offer you money for college if you do not first apply." Unfortunately it is not automatic and money is sometimes left on the table because students do not apply. Some great resources for students are listed below:
Don't delay! Start your scholarship search and application today.
(Hint: you do not have to be a senior to apply for scholarships and scholarship applications have deadlines-don't wait)
NOTE: The MISD Multi-Scholarship Application opens Thursday, October 17. Information will be available on the MISD website under Guidance and Counseling Department and will be sent out via email.

Check out the videos below for tips on completing the FAFSA. If you still need assistance sign up for MISD Financial Aid workshop on October 21 @ The MISD Center. You may sign up for the 6:30 session or the 7:15 session. During the workshop you will have access to a computer to complete the FAFSA. Please make sure and request your FAFSA ID (both student and parent) prior to October 21. Mentors will be available to provide assistance with completion. Also please make sure you bring necessary paperwork in order to complete the application. We had a great turn out at our October 3 workshop. Families walked away with a sigh of relief that they checked something off of the college readiness list.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to your counselor or visit the Go Center if you have questions or need additional information. For a complete list of counselor emails visit the MISD Counseling Department website.
