Recycling Club!
Fourth Graders Lead the Way to a Cleaner, Greener MatSu!
This year, twenty fourth grade students committed part of one lunch period each week to help
Fronteras recycle materials from the Blue Bins found in each classroom, the office and the
teachers’ work room. They collected a minimum of five large bags of mixed paper, four to five
bags of white office paper, and a trunk full of cardboard every week! They learned that each of
these can be 100% recycled, right here in Alaska, through the Valley Community for Recycling
Solutions. They also learned that recycling these items saved them from going into the MatSu
landfill, which is being filled more quickly than anticipated because of the Valley’s growth.
These students worked hard, and were rewarded with stickers and a small treat weekly, and
celebrated Earth Day and the 25th Year of the Recycling Center with Señora Carole Henry from
VCRS, who brought them each Earth chocolates and blue marbles to remind them that every
effort we make to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is important! When asked to share their favorite
part of recycling this year, they listed: helping the environment, nature and the earth; learning
about recycling and how to recycle; having people help each other and even getting the
opportunity to go to other parts of the school!
When asked about what they would tell fourth graders next year and how we could improve
this process, they suggested helping us introduce the fourth graders and ALL Fronteras
students to how and what to recycle (that will make the recyclers’ jobs easier!); meeting
with the younger students a couple times through the year to show and remind them about the
recycling; maybe changing the time (fourth graders really like eating lunch!); having a more
defined group schedule with MORE students involved; maybe having work gloves (fabric/
reusable.) These are all thoughtful ideas that can help encourage students to keep Fronteras
recycling and improve the Valley for everyone.
Please thank these students for their commitment and hard work: Louisa Schweisthal, Aurora
Mason, Reagan Prestien, Brooke Wehrii, Avery Caldwell, Emma Wade, Delaney Hughes,
Corvyn Menashe, Logan Jefferson, Mylah Mauzy, Julian Bruce, Bella Atkinson, MaKenna
Prestien, Gabriel Wargo, Tyson Bolinder, Mia Sanchez, Kaena Reynolds, Leah Bridgman and
Lily Childers. Also, big thank you to Señora Louisa Branchflower and Señora Carole Henry for
their guidance to the students in recycling.

Her team took second place in the state of AK!!! Rayna also took her heifer, Marfa, and registered Hereford for a livestock demonstration . | Max Schmidt was selected to join top 10U hockey players in the state of Alaska to join the Anchorage Junior Wolverines this past weekend to play AAA hockey in Chicago for the 2023 CCM Chi-Town Shuffle.
