Heavilin Reads: The Lemonade War
LW: Squeeze the Lemon
As part of our Heavilin Reads month, each day different staff members will be dressed in a lemon costume for a fundraiser we are calling “Squeeze the Lemon”. For $1, students can give that staff member a hug when they are wearing the lemon costume. All proceeds will go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which fights childhood cancer. For more information on Alex’s Lemonade Stand, please visit: www.alexslemonade.org

LW: Pucker Face Photos
We invite you to send in a photo of your child tasting a lemon and take a picture of their “pucker face”. Photos will be due by Tuesday, April 9th. If your child would like to participate, please email the photo to your child’s teacher and we will be posting them to the Heavilin TVs.
Your support is greatly appreciated as always; this is only a small portion of all the fun we will be having with our book. We can’t wait to see all the adorable photos!
LW: Got Used Books?
Heavilin students are excited to give with PRIDE and participate in a service learning project. Since all students were given the book, The Lemonade War, we are going to give back to the community in the form of a used book drive. From April 8 through April 12 we are asking for each student to bring in 2 gently used children’s books. All books collected will be donated to various community organizations in Porter County. As you are doing your Spring cleaning, remember to look for some books to donate!
Give us your lemons and help us make lemonade!

All profit from the book fair will be used to purchase new books for our Heavilin library.Kindergarten Round Up

JA in a Day: April 19
Friday, April 19 is a half day for students. All Heavilin students will experience JA in a Day on April 19. JA is a program that teaches students in grades K-12 financial responsibility, work readiness, and entrepreneurship.
Volunteers are needed to teach Junior Achievement at Heavilin on April 19th. The lessons contain discussion points and fun activities to help drive these points home. Teaching JA is easy! No experience required. The materials and curriculum are provided, along with a guidebook that tells you exactly what to say and do during the lessons. You meet with JA staff for a one-hour orientation session beforehand to discuss the program and classroom management techniques. There is a small amount of prep work (reading the lessons, separating materials) before you teach the program. That is all there is to it. The best part is… it is a lot of FUN!
To volunteer or get more information, please contact Kris Engel, JA Operations Manager, at 219.771.5064 or kengel@jachicago.org.

PTO Spring Fundraiser
SAVE THE DATE! Our 1st spring fundraiser and family event “Hula with Heavilin” will be held on Friday April 26, 2019 at Valparaiso High School. This year the Heavilin PTO is raising funds to purchase a new piano for the music department.
We need your help in order for the exciting fundraiser to succeed. There are many ways you can contribute, and we hope you will consider one or more of the following:
· Attend. Save the date and spread the word! A good time will be had by all! Tickets will be sold in advanced. Ticket order forms went home this week.
· Donate. Each classroom is sponsoring a themed basket to be auctioned off at the event.
· Sponsor. Would your place of business sponsor our event by making a cash donation? Sponsorships of $125 would significantly offset overhead costs. Your business’ logo would be featured on tables and in our Heavilin cookbook that will be available for purchase.
· Participate. Be a volunteer chef for “Chefs Around the School House”. Compete in a cook off against fellow parents and teachers. Chefs may form a team if they choose or work alone. Each chef will need to prepare samples of their favorite dish or dessert. A favorite will be voted upon by our guests. A cookbook will be complied and available for purchase.
If you have any questions about how you can help, or about the event itself, please feel free to contact Kimberly Emmett (kimberly.emmett@yahoo.com) or Janelle Evans (jdmentz@gmail.com).
Thank you for your time and support of Heavilin Elementary School!
