What is Lyme Disease

It is an inflammatory disease characterized at first by a rash, headache, fever, and chills, and later by possible arthritis and neurological and cardiac disorders, caused by bacteria that are transmitted by ticks.


A tick-borne illness caused by the bacterium borrelia burdorferi.

Signs and symptoms

Lyme disease causes a rash, often in a bull's-eye pattern, and flu-like symptoms. Joint pain and weakness in the limbs also can occur.

How is it treated

Most people with Lyme disease recover completely with appropriate antibiotic treatment. For those who develop syndromes after their infection is treated, pain medications may provide symptomatic relief.

How to prevent Lyme Disease

avoid heavy dense forests

wear long clothing and a hat if in a forest

use Lyme disease vaccine
