Cougar Nation-
Small Middle School is the flagship middle school in all of Austin in regards to student diversity. Our unique, all-inclusive, programming and our wonderful staff attract students from all areas of town. In fact, we have over 36 elementary schools represented here each day and are looking to add more schools as our recruiting efforts now include more East side campuses. With this diversity also comes a certain amount of responsibility; the responsibility of teaching students how to appreciate and celebrate it. We as a staff make sure our students are mindful that our school is composed of individuals representing different races, different religions, different sexual orientations, different viewpoints, and different upbringings. We want our students to be cognizant of these facts with their speech and especially their actions.
In the last few weeks, there has been an increase in hateful speech on campuses all around the nation, and unfortunately, ours is no exception. We take these incidents very seriously and are working hard to make sure our students know that any hateful speech or defamatory comments made about a race, sex, or group of persons will be dealt with as seriously and intensely as AISD allows us. Every person on our campus has the right to attend school without feeling he or she will be the victim of derogatory comments or be made fun of. If you or your student hears of anybody being hateful and hurtful with their speech, please notify the office immediately.
Zombie Fun Run: Wow! Thank you, thank you, thank you for making our first ever Fun Run fundraiser a smashing success! Nevermind the fact that we raised over $24,500 for our school, more importantly we hosted an amazing event on campus that built community and rewarded students for helping our school! On Friday of last week we had two Zombie Runs (6th and 7th), and an impromptu dance for 8th grade in the afternoon, which was all made possible because of our community of parents, guardians, staff, and local businesses. The kids had the time of their lives and are super excited about what it will look like next year. So are we :)
Have a great week!

Request for Goat Gear
Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
Staying warm would be delightful,
If you know how knit or sew
Our goats would be so happy and warm, you know.
Do you have a special talent of knitting or sewing? Do you have an unused dog sweater (large or medium) you would like to donate? Let Marlo Malott, Green Tech Academic Dean know if you would be able to help keep our three goats nice and toasty this winter. Call or email at marlo.malott@austinisd.org or 512-841-6742. Thank you in advance for your support.
