Transportation Reminders
Getting to and from Greenfield
Safety is a top priority. The information below is intended to keep everyone safe. Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8:15 AM. Please note that this is a change of five minutes from previous years. There is no supervision on school grounds or crossing guards until that time. Gates will be opened at 8:15 when the teachers go out on duty.
Please review the applicable information below with your students.
Walking:
- Walk on the sidewalk at all times.
- Cross at the canal with the crossing guard. Cross at Poinciana and the front entrance to Greenfield with the crossing guard.
- Students should leave the school grounds immediately after dismissal unless they are taking part in an organized after-school activity.
- Please inform your child’s teacher well ahead if your student will be changing their regular means of coming to or from school.
Riding bikes/scooters:
- All students are allowed to ride their bike/scooter to school, however, Kindergarteners should be accompanied by an adult or older sibling.
- Helmets are strongly encouraged.
- Walk your bike/scooter in crosswalks. Follow all traffic laws while riding. Please make sure students understand they should never ride against opposing traffic in the bike line.
- Follow the directions of the crossing guards at the canal, Poinciana and the front entrance to Greenfield.
- Bikes/scooters are to be stored at the bike racks on the east side of campus.
- Bikes/scooters need to be walked once you enter campus.
- GPS does not allow bikes to be ridden by anyone on campus (this includes adults)
- Lock your bike or scooter. The school is not responsible for the protection of students’ bikes or scooters.
- Motorized scooters, shoes with wheels (ex: Heelys) and hoverboards are not allowed on campus at any time.
Notwithstanding the above, the principal may alter the above guidelines because of a localized safety situation. The requirement of helmet use would be one such alteration.
Parent drop-off/pick-up:
Parents have three options when picking up and dropping off by car. They may use the Parent Pick Up/ Drop Off Loop (also sometimes simply called “Parent Pickup”), the main parking lot, or the Greenfield Road Lot.
- Students should be dropped off and picked up in the “parent pick up” area along the south driveway on campus.
- Parents dropping off/picking up students should turn right at the marquee and proceed through the turnaround.
- Students should be dropped off at the sidewalk by the Ramada. Students then proceed through the gated grassy area and into the schoolyard.
- Please do not drop students off at the big gate on the turnaround or in front of the school.
- After dropping off/picking up students, vehicles will need to turn right at the marquee and proceed through the Greenfield Elementary parking lot to wrap around and exit back onto Elliot Road. Signs and arrows will assist in directing traffic.
- Please display a bold, easy to read sign with your student’s name on your dashboard when picking up your students. This speeds up the process!
Main Parking Lot and Greenfield Road Lot:
- Parents who wish to walk their students to the front gate may park in our main parking lot.
- As our main lot fills quickly, many parents choose to enter our overflow lot off of Greenfield Road, just north of The ACES school, and use the sidewalk to walk to the main gate.
- Students and parents must use the crosswalk to cross traffic and proceed to the main gate, which is just north of the front of the school.
- At 8:15, this gate will be opened and supervised by the on-duty teacher. Parents may say goodbye at the gate and students enter the playground. (On the first two days of school parents are welcome on the playground for photos and hugs.)
- Students place their backpacks on the designated line for their outside the school building and will have recess time until the bell rings at 8:33 to start the day.
- At the end of the day, parents who wish to pick up their students at the main gate may use either of these parking areas to do so. A teacher on duty will monitor the gate and release younger students directly to their parents.
Greenfield Road Lot Pickup:
- An alternative to using the Parent Pickup loop in the afternoon is to use the Greenfield Road Lot.
- Students being picked up in this area may walk along the sidewalk to the overflow lot off of Greenfield Road.
- Parents should not arrive in this area prior to 3:00 pm, and should obey all traffic laws. Please do not block the driveway as this is the entrance for buses for Greenfield Elementary and The ACES school.
Riding the bus:
- All students should be able to recite their address, phone number, and the location of their bus stop.
- Students riding the bus to school are dropped off on the sidewalk and enter the schoolyard through the main gate.
- Students riding the bus home line up according to their designated bus in the school gym. Upon arrival of the appropriate school bus, students are led out to board by faculty members on duty. While waiting for their bus, they are expected to leave all items, including food and drink, in their backpacks so as not to delay the boarding process once the bus arrives. Items such as homework or small toys take extra time to re-pack and disrupt the line of waiting students. We don’t want anyone left behind!
- Transportation provided by the District is a privilege. Inappropriate conduct at bus stops, on district vehicles, or in the process of boarding or exiting from a vehicle may result in student disciplinary action including, but not limited to denial of transportation privileges.
- GPS provides bus transportation for elementary students who live one mile or more from school. For safety reasons, the District encourages parents to supervise their children at the bus stop.
- Students are not allowed, without a written request from a parent and approval from the principal or principal designee, to ride a bus other than their assigned bus.
- It is helpful for students to know a specific landmark at their drop off location, as many areas of our neighborhood look quite similar.
Please note that Poinciana Road is not an option for pickup by parent car for the safety of our walkers and bike riders, and to observe Town of Gilbert traffic regulations.
