Spirit Week and More
Greetings Woodcrest families,
It is Spirit Week here at Spring Lake Park Schools and Woodcrest is in full swing celebrating what it means to be a Panther. As you know, we will be hosting a student Fun Run this Friday during the school day. Your child is encouraged to wear school spirit gear/colors or come dressed ready to enjoy the Fun Run. On the same evening, the Woodcrest PTO would like to invite you to join us for a Family Fun Night. There will be food trucks and games for our families.
In addition to the daily school spirit themes, our students and teachers are celebrating their learning with each other in a variety of ways. Our students have been working on a large art project. It is beautiful! I have put a photo of it below! Every day this week, I’ve observed staff and students stop and enjoy the art.
Please make sure your family is planning for fall break coming soon. There is no school for students during fall break, October 18-22. Students return to school, Monday, October 25.
Additionally, we are hosting Parent-Teacher Conferences throughout this month. Your child’s homeroom teacher will be inviting you to join them to meet and talk together about your child’s learning. Teachers will share information about your child from their Learner Profile. They will also share the goals that have been set with your child in their Personal Learner Map. These conversations will give both you and the teacher insight into your child’s experience here at Woodcrest.
Thank you for your continued partnership.
Con gratitúd,
John Franke
Principal
Reminder: Send students to school with a face mask
Face masks are currently required for grades K-6 due to high COVID-19 transmission rates in our community. Please send your student(s) to school with a face mask to wear and an extra in case their mask gets dirty. Thank you!
MAP Testing
Woodcrest students will participate in the reading assessment on October 7. There is no need for special preparation.
Teachers will use this information to personalize learning experiences and will share information with families during upcoming conferences. Our school and district use information from these assessments to look at overall math and reading performance over time. This helps us determine how learning is going for all students.
Optional COVID-19 tests available at school
Students and staff who choose can now pick up a test (saliva test) in their building's health office on any school day. Follow the directions to complete the test at home, then return the test to the health office the following school day. The health office will submit the test for processing. In addition, the Minnesota Department of Health has information on a variety of COVID-19 testing locations. Anyone in the process of being tested for COVID-19 due to potential exposure or symptoms should stay home until all related test results are received. If away from school for testing, communicate with the school's nurse and consult with them before returning to school.
Con la Sra. Hazel
Students were tasked to move across the floor with only two mats. If they touched the ground they were to return to the beginning. The emphasis of the activity was "honesty." They were to return to the beginning and self-monitor whether they failed. It was also stated that "failing while trying is okay, but cheating is not."
The next round they had to cross the gymnasium with their mats without speaking! Emphasis was on non-verbal communication and self-control. The lesson ended with a circle reviewing their time together and how it is important to learn from failure. Each group also had an opportunity to share their strategy so others could learn from their peers.
Last chance to enter the Panther Pride Sweepstak
Today is the last day to enter the Panther Pride Sweepstakes and have a chance to win $500 for your school and $50 for you! Visit the Sweepstakes page to answer today’s question. Winners will be notified on Thursday and will be invited to the Panther Football Homecoming game this Friday, October 8. Good luck and go Panthers!
WCSI PTO FUN RUN FUNdraiser!
We are reaching the final lap for our FUN RUN! Please gather all donations and return them to school by this Friday in the envelope provided! Currently, we are at about 1/3 of our goal, and still need to raise $10,000. We encourage everyone to ask one more friend/family member for a tax-deductible donation which will help us be able to continue offering our usual programs like mileage club, staff appreciation, family events, community engagement, book fairs, etc.
