Helena's Adventure
Analyzing an Athean from "A Midsummer Nights Dream"
Peoples emotions usually control how they act.
Throughout Act 1, we find out whio is getting married. While we are finding that out, we also find out that there is a love triangle. Hermia, which is Egues daughter, is supposed to be marrying Demetrius but loves Lysander. Lysander loves Hermia, Helena loves Demetrius but Demetruis loves Hermia. So both the boys love Hermia. Helena just wants to be loved but no body loves her. Since she feels as if no body loves her, that causes her to have a low self- esteem. Helena is also a easy lover, she fell inlove with Demetrius because he made love to her. Therefore she is an easy lover. Helena talks about how everyone in Athens think she is as beautiful as Hemia, but Helena doesnt think so because Demetrius doesnt. "Through Athens I am thought as fair as she. But what of that? Demetrius thinks not so" (I.i.227-228). This quote shows that Helena obviously has low self essteem because she is trying to compare herself to Hermia. This clearly explains that peoples emotions control how they act because she is letting her low self esteem get to her and make her change the way she acts.
Strong emotions can change the kind of people we are.
In Act III, Helena explains how Hermia has changed because of Lysander and Demetrius. Helena and Hermia used to be best friends, and now that both the boys love Hermia and not Helena, it has made Helena change. Helena is starting to act different towards Hermia because Helena belives that the boys only love Hermia because of her looks. When in reality Hermia hasnt done anything wrong to Helena, Hermia didnt make the guys fall inlove with her, it just happened. So techanically Helena is the one who changed because she is acusing Hermia of changing when Helena is the one who changed. "The sisters' vows, the hours that we have spent when we have chid the hasty-footed time for parting us-- oh is it all forgot" (III.ii.202-204). This quote is about Helena explaining how she believes that Hermia is changing because of the boys, but in reality Helena is the one who changed.
People dont understand love
In act I, Helena doesnt understand why Demetrius loves Hermia and not her. She blames Hermia because of her beauty. Helena just wants Demetrius to lover her instead of Hermia. "None, but your beauty. Would that fault were mine" (I.i. 201). This quote is about Helena wishing she has Hermias beauty so that way Demetrius will start to love her because of her looks.
Conclusion
I do not compare myself to Helena because I do not let relationships or love problems affect the way I act. I will always act myself even when something is going on. I do understand love unlike Helena, if someone doesn't love you, then they don't love you. No need to try and force them to love you. Emotions can control the way you act because if something dramatic is going on if your life then you might act different, but not me.
