Report Card Refresher

Hello MLC parents!

Since conferences are this week, I wanted to offer our services for report card explanations on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17 and 18. When you come in for your child’s conferences, if you would also like a one-to-one explanation of how MLC report cards work, please ask in the main office for me, Emily Wright, or for your child’s school counselor.


We would love the opportunity to spend time showing you the ways in which our progress reports and report cards can provide useful information to you and your child! In 10 minutes, we can clear up confusion and answer questions that you might have

Helping Our Children Develop Good Work Habits

On a related note, please continue to encourage your children to develop consistent and positive work habits, as these are the skills that help them succeed academically. Becoming well-organized time managers and practicing self-discipline around electronic devices and social media are skills that take time and practice to become routine. Children need reminders and support in order to be proficient in these areas.

Some areas to review with your children:

· How they keep track of assignments (In an agenda? in their phone? in their Outlook calendar?)

· How they schedule their time for homework (Do they have a routine? If not, do they need one?)

· When they do homework and if they consistently complete it (If not, should they change their approach?)

· Whether they interact with social media (including texting) while doing homework (This is not a good idea, as it can interrupt their focus and flow, so that they do not learn as well as they could.)

· How much time they spend on homework vs. social media/electronics (Are these appropriately balanced, or are they spending too much time on social media/electronics?)

IB DP Introduction

Dear MLC Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

I am pleased to announce that just a few short weeks ago, we received our authorization for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for Grades 11- 12. We are very excited about this new opportunity for our students and especially for the Class of 2017, our first anticipated participants of this programme. We have met with your child and have introduced them to the programme and have begun to look at scheduling for the next two years.

We would like to introduce the Diploma Programme to you and we invite you to join us in small groups at a time that is convenient for you. At this meeting, we will provide you with an overview of the programme, the requirements of the IB diploma, university recognition of the IB diploma, and what the programme means for your child.

It is important that all 10th grade parents attend this meeting. Please select a meeting time that is convenient for you and plan to be in attendance so that we can share what the next two years at MLC will look like for your child!

If you have not had a chance to sign up, please check the remaining presentation times that might work for you.

MLC's Got Talent

The National Honor Society is hosting MLC’s Got Talent on Friday March 20, 2015, a talent showcase that will feature acts from both the middle and high school.

Tickets are $5 at the door; all proceeds go to Heifer International, an organization that supports agricultural communities in need.

Four Day Spring College Tour

Wilson-Gray YMCA Youth & Family Center

Get your first taste of what college life has to offer! Our Spring Break College Tour is designed for high school students to get a feel for campus life on-location.

We will visit colleges in

North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland.

College Tour dates: April 12th — April 17th.

Junior class field trip: Financial Reality Fair and CCSU campus tour

The Financial Reality Fair is an approximately 2½-hour, hands-on experience in which students, after identifying their career choice and starting salaries, are provided a budget sheet requiring them to live within their monthly salary while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food. And some not-so-basics like entertainment and travel.

The cost of the trip is $10 for the bus and an optional additional $8.50 for lunch at the CCSU cafeteria. Please email agegetskas@crec.org if you need additional information or a permission slip.

9th Grade Team Field Trip to SCSU

On Monday, March 30th all 9th grade students will have the opportunity to participate in a great field trip.

We will be traveling to SCSU in New Haven, CT where students will be given guided tour of the campus from MLC alumni that currently attend the University.

After the tour they will attend a play delivered by the Chamber Repertory Theatre of Boston, Ma.

Immediately after the show students will enjoy an all you can eat lunch in Connecticut Hall which is the main dining facility on campus.

Busses will be leaving MLC at 8:00 in the morning and returning back to school by 3:00pm dismissal.

Lunch and tickets to the play are included in the cost of the trip.

Permission slips and $35 cash are due back no later than Tuesday, March 24, 2015.

Attention 7th Grade Families

Just a reminder that students must have a combined total of 15 Dragon Points from Quarters 3 and 4 to travel to New York. We are confident that students who have committed to attending this trip are equally as committed to keeping their Dragon Points. Additionally, final payment for the trip is due by April 12th. The total is $400.00 and there are still spots available for students who are interested in attending.

6th Grade Fundraiser

6th graders were given the handouts for the PTO fundraiser for Butter Braids. If any 6th grader needs another one, they are located in Ms. Flad’s room at the front table.

Interested in hosting an exchange student?

The Metropolitan Learning Center has enjoyed a wonderful and long-term relationship with The Laurasian Institution (TLI) which sends us two/three wonderful exchange students each year. These students are more than just exchange students they are an integral part of the strengthening and success of our exchange program at MLC. These students provide excellent opportunities for our MLC students to practice their Chinese language. Our exchange students model the academic excellence that American students aspire to and provide assistance to their classmates in many of their other classes. MLC is looking for host families for our exchange students for the school year of 2015 - 2016. They are arriving to the US in mid-August, 2015.


We are hoping that you would be interested in becoming a host family. This would be a great experience for you, your child and the exchange student. . Connecticut Board of Education Opportunity

The Connecticut State Board of Education is now accepting applications from Grade 11 students who are interested in serving as members of the state board of education for the 2015-2016 year. Two students, who will be appointed by the Governor, will serve a one-year term, beginning July 1. The application package can be downloaded by clicking on the link below. Complete application packages must be postmarked on or before March 16, 2015.
