Colt Corner
Colleyville Middle School
May 6, 2022
Colts,
Our teachers are so grateful for the support and appreciation that you have shown this week and always. Each gesture, big or small, means so much and is so encouraging, especially during the busy month of May.
With STAAR testing next week (see dates below), we ask that you continue to encourage your Colt. Please encourage them to get a good night's rest the night before any of their assessment days and consider limiting their technology use before bedtime to maximize their rest. Also, please remind your Colt to bring their fully charged district-issued device and charger. Our students have been working hard and we are so proud of them. We know that STAAR is just one measure of our Colt’s academic performance. Let’s continue to maximize our strong partnership together so that our students have the greatest opportunities for success.
Thank you for the important role that you play in our Colts lives. Let’s have a great weekend and week ahead.

STAAR/EOC Week
Our STARR week continues this coming week. During state testing season, campuses are closed to visitors in order to have a secured testing environment, as required by the state.
Lunch times may be modified to accommodate and maximize student testing opportunities during these testing days. Thank you for your continued assistance in limiting outside food deliveries to emergencies only. As a reminder, students have the ability to receive a free lunch from our nutritional service team everyday this school year. Please remind your student to not forget their lunch if they do bring one from home that day. Also, please encourage your student to get a good night's rest the night before any of their assessment days while also considering limiting their technology use before bedtime to maximize their rest.
State law states that students may not opt out of standardized or any other tests. If the student is absent on the day of the assessment, they will be required to make up the assessment when they return to school.
We encourage all students to do their best on the state assessment as it has implications for the student in regards to summer programs or next school year’s schedule with additional required tutorials. If a student misses particular assessments, the student will have required tutorial times per the state House Bill 4545 law.
Finally, remind your student to bring their fully charged district-issued device, along with their charger. Thank you for encouraging your student to do their best and support of the teachers/school as we navigate testing season together.

Survey Regarding HSI
Survey Regarding HSI
GCISD is reviewing human sexuality instruction in light of changes made by the Texas Legislature and the adoption of a new health textbook. As GCISD considers next steps in light of these changes, we are seeking parental input and feedback.
The District has already emailed to parents a letter via Skyward that further explains legislative changes and reviews the District's current practices. We encourage parents who want to become more familiar with the District's current human sexuality instruction, and to learn about potential new instructional materials, to learn more by visiting the GCISD website, then complete the survey.
Video instructions on accessing the survey can be watched here. If you plan to not opt your child into this portion of the health education curriculum, we are asking that you still complete the survey.
We look forward to, and appreciate parents' feedback. If you have questions, please contact gcisd.survey@gcisd.net.

Bring Your Own Device Update for 2022-2023
As GCISD continues preparations for next school year, the Technology Services department has an important update to share regarding the use of personal devices on GCISD campuses. Beginning in August 2022, personal PC or MacBook laptops will no longer be able to connect to the internet while on a GCISD campus. This means that students will need to use a district-issued device while on campus.
District-issued devices are already required during standardized state testing, but will now be required at all times when using the internet on a GCISD campus. This change is being implemented to further enhance the District’s cybersecurity efforts. Additionally, GCISD will be able to better provide technical support if all students are utilizing district-issued technology.
Prior to the start of the 2022-2023 school year, all GCISD students who do not already have a district-issued device will be given one at a designated time on their campus. Pre-K through 2nd-grade students will receive an iPad, 3rd-grade through 8th-grade students will receive a Chromebook, and 9th-grade through 12th-grade students will receive a Windows PC.
Although personal laptops and tablets will no longer be able to connect, personal cell phones will still be able to connect to the “GCISD BYOD Guest Wireless” Wi-Fi network. Any questions or concerns regarding this change can be directed to technology@gcisd.net.
Middle School Schedule Changes for 2022-2023
Middle School Schedule Changes for 2022-2023
As we continue to make plans for the 2022-2023 school year, GCISD would like to make middle school parents aware of an important schedule change that is coming next school year. All four GCISD middle schools will utilize a schedule that features all seven class periods, plus the student’s advisory period, each day.
Additionally, this schedule will change the start time of each school day to 8:10 a.m. and the end time of each day to 3:30 p.m. The start and end times for all GCISD elementary and high schools will not be changed for next year.
After a review of the current schedule and staffing, these changes will allow middle schools and the District to use staff time and resources more efficiently while continuing to meet the needs of our students.
An example schedule can be viewed here, but each campus will share their final class schedule with families when it is available. If you have any questions, please contact your campus.
Registration for the 2022-2023 school year begins May 2
Beginning Monday, registration for both new and returning families will be open in Skyward. As a reminder, the primary guardian will need to complete the registration in Skyward Family Access. If you have forgotten your login and/or password, please click on Forgot login or password on the login screen and that information will be sent to your email.
Please note that bus rider registration will not be included in Skyward registration this year. If students need to register as a bus rider, they can do so by visiting www.GCISD.net/transportation after completing registration in Skyward.
Construction Updates
Colleyville Middle School will be closed over the summer due to renovations taking place inside the school building.
Also, over the next few months, construction updates will be taking place on a few of our GCISD campuses. The track and turf at the following locations will be closed for school and public use:
The track and field at Mustang Panther Stadium will be closed beginning May 1
The track and field at Colleyville Heritage High will be closed beginning May 1
The track and field at Cross Timbers Middle will be closed beginning June 1
Please do not utilize the areas specified at these facilities during construction. Thank you!
Drivers Ed – Verification Of Enrollments (VOE) Needed
VOE's may be requested by sending your student to the main office or email your request to our Data-Clerk Heather.Ingram@GCISD.net, and include your students First and Last name. The last day to request VOE's is May 25. Students can come to the main office to pick up their VOE once it is ready.

Standard Response Protocols
In GCISD, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priority. We have partnered with the I Love You Guys Foundation to implement Standard Response Protocols, or as we called them, SPRs, that are used in emergency situations.
Emergency personnel in Colleyville, Euless and Grapevine work in partnership with GCISD to ensure we keep all students and staff safe. In this video, members of these emergency services and GCISD staff help explain each SRP and its function in keeping students and staff safe. Learn more about GCISD's Security and Emergency Management by clicking here.

STAAR Online
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is transitioning all state assessments to be administered online by the 2022–2023 school year. To support this change, GCISD will be administering all state assessments online this Spring and is encouraging students to visit the practice tests site released by the TEA to prepare for online testing. For upcoming testing, students will be using district-issued personal devices.
The online practice tests familiarize students with the general tools, designated supports, and accessibility features that may appear in online tests. In the practice site, there are features that may be turned on and off for students with identified accommodations such as text-to-speech and spelling assistance. Organized by grade level and subject, all 2018, 2019, and 2021 STAAR released tests are also available on the online practice site. Please visit this link for instructions on how to access the practice site.
To view upcoming online STAAR testing windows and dates, please visit our website.
More specific information about student testing days will be coming soon. Please submit a help desk ticket if you are having trouble launching a test.
Hey 6th grade parents!
Summer is almost here! Please remember your student will need the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before starting 7th grade. These are often given during 11 and 12 year old well visits. Turning your student's immunization records into the nurse now gets this off your list of "to dos" for summer and makes for an easier registration process! You can view and print your child's vaccine records on file with GCISD by logging in to your Skyward Family Access account. Pick your student's name and then click "Health Info" on the bottom of the left column. Then click "display options" at the top. A box will pop up and click "Show Vaccinations". You can take this record to CVS, Walgreens, CareNow, or any facility or pharmacy who offers vaccinations should you not have a primary care doctor.
