The Miller Maverick Cheerleaders attended the National Cheerleading Association Cheerleading Camp this summer and received awards in the Middle School Division.
The Miller Intermediate School students received the Top Cheer Award, Top Band Dance Award and the Herkie Award. Keandrea Travis, one of the captains, competed against other middle school and high school cheerleaders in the All-American Division and received an award as an All-American Cheerleader.
Albright Middle School students won scholarships from the Houston Masonic Library and Museum Foundation.
Prudence Anyasor, Ngan (Christine) Nguyen and Andy Van each won a $500 scholarship. Anyasor now attends Kerr High School. They will be performing Monday, September 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Gray Masonic Lodge #329.
Alief Early College High School teacher Shiney Abraham participated in the Supreme Court Summer Institute for Teachers.
The Supreme Court Summer Institute for Teachers is a six-day professional development institute held in Washington, DC in June. Only 60 teachers are accepted each year.
Teachers participate in sessions led by Supreme Court experts, journalists and lawyers, including officials who have worked for the Obama administration and other previous administrations. Teachers also visited the Supreme Court to hear the decisions and had a private reception with Chief Justice John Roberts.
Applications for the 2020 Institute open in October. The majority of the trip was made possible by grants funded through DonorsChoose.org.
Kerr High School teacher Doris Curry was awarded a scholarship to attend the Jump$tart National Educator Conference.
The scholarship was made possible by Next Gen Personal Finance. The conference is the nation's premier professional development event for teachers dedicated to financial education in the classroom.
O’Donnell Middle School teacher Dr. Richard Spitz recently performed in musical productions.
Spitz performed with the Houston Gilbert and Sullivan Society production of "A Topsy Turvy Mikado" and also performed with Johnny Mathis at the Golden Nugget Casino in Lake Charles.
Center for Advanced Careers teacher Sherita Harman was spotlighted in an article by Applied Educational Systems (AES).
Harmon was featured in an article titled, "6 Lifechanging Pieces of Teaching Advice for New Teachers from Experienced Educators." AES is one of Alief ISD's curriculum providers for the Health Science Program.

Blood Bros. BBQ was recently featured in national culinary magazines.
Mo Amer sold out five shows at the Houston Improv Comedy Club.
Former Center for Advanced Careers student hired by the Sugar Land Skeeters.
Taylor High School graduate Anthony Pham (Class of 2019) currently operates the main camera on the field.
