Notes from the NURSE

Keeping our Students Healthy

You may have recently heard news reports about increases of illness this fall, as is typical with this time of year. In SMSD, we have begun to see increases in absence due to illness; with a few physician diagnosed illnesses and many generalized symptoms.

One of the most important things to help decrease the spread of illness is for those who are not feeling well to stay home. If your child has a temperature of over 100.0 or has vomited or has had diarrhea, they must stay home. Students may return to school when they have been free from fever (without medication), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours.

Your child may also be ill, but without these symptoms. They may have a sore throat, headache, cough, or generally not feel well. If you suspect illness, please keep your child home. If in doubt about sending your child to school, contact the school nurse or your child’s doctor.

Weekly Schedule Reminders....

Please always check the school calendar for the most up to date schedule SMN Calendar

Athletic Update

The Shawnee Mission North Bison Swim and Dive team continued its excellent week with a convincing win Friday night as they scored 131 points to defeat Olathe West (88) and Olathe North (73) at Summit Trail in Olathe. North won 8 of the 12 events, including all three of the relays. Individual event winners included Jonathan Guild, who won both the 200 IM and the 100 Backstroke. His backstroke was a personal record as well as the top backstroke of the season for North. Junior Lopez also won both of his events (100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke) in dominant fashion. Zak Kohoutek rounded out the wins with a big victory in the 50 Freestyle, his only individual race. North had 4 events where we placed three swimmers in the top 5. In the 100 Backstroke, Guild, Charlie Brooks, Jack Nely and Porter Lee took 4 of the top 5 spots. A few other “super swimmers” included Vince Gutierrez, Gage Chapman, Sebastian Menendez, Ami Vazquez, Troy Wymer, Max Dillon, David Herrera Rosario and Sahid Anzures. The divers also had another solid performance as the prep for the Shawnee Mission Dive Invitational on Saturday. The next swim action is Junior Varsity League on Tuesday and then Varsity Sunflower League next weekend.

The Bison took care of business during Senior Night on Tuesday as they defeated the Raiders of Shawnee Mission South 104 - 73. North had victories in 2 of the 3 relays as well as individual wins by Charlie Brooks (200 IM - 2:23.47), Jack Eaton in diving (228.15), and Jack Nely doubled up with wins in the 100 Butterfly (1:01.59) and the 100 Back (1:02.26). North placed 2nd in 8 of the 12 events, and 3rd in 9 of the events. We also swept the top three spots in the 200 IM, Diving, 100 Fly and 100 Back. We honored three managers and the following seniors: Adam Baker, Ethan Blood, Hudson Boldt, Gage Chapman, Jack Harbert, David Herrera-Rosario, Jack Kremer, Junior Lopez, Jack Nely and Jakob Rooney. With a total team effort, the Bison won our second straight dual of the season, the only two of the year for us. Our next meet is Friday (Jan. 27th) against Olathe North and Olathe West.

Varsity Boys Wrestling falls to KC Turner 48-24 in a dual on Thursday evening. Jonny Scavuzzo wins by Forfeit at 138 lbs, Ethan Steele falls by pin at 150 lbs. Both the boys and girls team are in action at home on Tuesday, Jan 31 vs Olathe East. SMN will be accepting donations for the McFall family of SM South. The spouse of Brett Mcfall, long-time boys varsity coach and his father, have both been diagnosed with breast cancer. The Theme is ESPN Coaches vs Cancer Night. Wear pink to support this worthy cause.

A busy three meet week ended with a highly entertaining Baker tournament at Mission Bowl in Olathe. Baker bowling pits teams of five with each member bowling two frames a game. Pool play saw the JV girls finish with the number three seed in the finals bracket, but lost in the first round to SM West. The JV boys entered the bracket in sixth and were unable to overcome the number three seed SMW. The varsity boys finished pool play with the fourth seed, but lost a close three game match to SM South. The varsity girls were the fourth seed in the bracket and won in the first round versus SM East and advanced to the semifinals to face SM West. After a close first game that came down to the 10th frame the lady Bison couldn’t pull out the final game and were eliminated from the bracket.
