“Outside the Window: An Ecocritical Look at Early American Pastoral Embroideries”
Santa Clara University
The most frequent images women chose for large embroidered pictures were landscapes with figures. Yet, a major feature of the iconography of these complex works--the landscape--has remained unexamined; these objects have not been investigated in terms of the changes taking place in the real landscapes in which these women lived. My project reframes these works from an eco-critical perspective, situating them in terms of the environmental history of the period.
First and second year History graduate students are required to attend so plan to make the History Workshop a regular part of your Tuesday activities.
