"In lieu of a full career day with parent presentations, I did some research about some different ideas and came up with the idea to have a College and Career Spirit Week. It was organized to say that the student’s journey starts today…and in the end they have a career of their dreams. It is something that both staff and students were asked to participate in. Teachers were encouraged to stop and have a morning meeting type conversation about how they ended up in their careers. Teachers and students both dressed up for interview day. On the final day, students came in dressed as everything from Obstetrician to Artist to NFL player. It ended up being a lot of fun !" _ Lori Vollmer

After school counseling lessons on career and career clusters fifth grade students researched an assigned career and worked with group members to identify career clusters, subject of study, educational requirements, job responsibilities, and tools needed to do the job. Some students were able to connect with professionals from the community which provided our students with real life career experiences, this was extremely meaningful for our students. Fifth grade students then created tri-folds and hosted a career fair to our fourth grade students and then later present to their parents. Students did a phenomenal job on this PBL career project!!

May was Mental Health Awareness month, the ERMS Unified Mental Health spent the last week in May focusing on healthy “self care” tips to both students and faculty. Needless to say, food was involved
As part of JMLMS Advisory (Lions Den) each Den created a Community Symbol that they felt represented their Den and/or community. School ambassadors then took those images and created a JML Community tree so all symbols were represented as a collective image along with the branches displaying all of the differences and similarities we have within our community (gender, ability, ethnicity, religion, values, strengths…).
Also, there is a picture of the JML Student Ambassadors end of the year celebration!

For the first picture, Ms. Moore and the Multicultural and Diversity Club take a “sorority pose” picture as they enjoy the last day of club! On this day, the club enjoyed talking about TSM Diversity Day and how they liked seeing staff in their cultural attire two days prior.
For the second picture, TSM celebrates End Child Poverty Day (Red Nose Day). Students and staff wore red throughout the day to spread awareness of child poverty. Mrs. Ibarra did an amazing job putting this event and fundraiser together here at TSM.
The third picture represents TSM SEAC Awards. This awards ceremony recognizes excellence in supporting special education. In this picture you will find one of our lovely 6th grade students receiving her award.
The last picture, you will find current 6th grade students talking about their experiences here at TSM. Our rising 6th graders (current 5th graders) from Cedar Lane Elementary School and Sanders Corner Elementary School enjoyed the presentation and tour around TSM!

We are getting ready to kick off our final SoS campaign for the year: Mental Health + Medical Access. In April, students and staff members completed a self-care assessment to help determine the area of highest need.
Based on the survey results, our SoS committee members created 3 separate sessions geared towards increasing self-care: emotional, physical, and over-all health. These sessions are being offered weekly beginning this week- 05/15.
For its final campaign of the year, Willard Sources of Strength took on Mental Health & Medical Access. In April, students and staff members completed a self-care assessment to help determine the highest areas of need. Based on the survey results, our SoS committee members created 3 separate sessions geared towards increasing self-care in the areas of emotional, physical, and overall balance. Together, we hosted dog therapy with Heeling House, a yoga session with Treehouse Fit and a Stress Busters workshop with members of our very own UMHT team – Fiona Brown and Lisa Harris! We were thrilled at the turnout and the enthusiasm from our students!

CAMPUS - Chris Clarke
CAMPUS Senior Celebration
The CAMPUS Class of 2019 and their families came out last Thursday night to celebrate their completion of the program with a ceremony at the Loudoun County Administration Building.
An LCPS school counseling initiative, CAMPUS began in the spring of 2002. The program now serves approximately 300 students in grades 9 through 12. CAMPUS seeks to provide support and encouragement to students who demonstrate the ability to achieve academic success and college admission. Admission to and graduation from college are among the goals of the program. Students must commit to attending mandatory CAMPUS meetings and/or classes during the school day and participate in activities throughout the school year.
More than 80 of those students will graduate high school in a couple of days. At last Thursday’s ceremony, all the graduates received a certificate, a rose and a special cord for their graduation robes, and most received a hug from their program Facilitator & School Counselor.
Former LCPS CAMPUS student alum from Loudoun Valley HS, Nekisha (Kisha) Grigsby, Pharm.D. delivered the keynote address.
Many of the students Dr. Grigsby spoke to will be the first in their family to attend college. After Dr. Grigsby’s address, retired Del. Joe T. May presented the Loudoun Laurels Stewardship Scholarship winner, Riverside’s Maria-Paula Proano, was pleasantly surprised at the news. Miss Proano will receive a $10,000 scholarship renewable for up to 4-years toward any college tuition in Virginia.
Miss Proano will attend George Mason University this fall, and she’s not the only CAMPUS student with plans for higher education. Ninety-five percent of the CAMPUS Class of 2019 are heading to college next fall.
“This fall will become chapter two of your journey, so go out and do great things.” Mr. Clarke said, he hopes the students will come back and share their experiences in 4-5 years with our next generation of CAMPUS students.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Good Neighbor Grants
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation (JKCF) Good Neighbor Grants program was established in 2012 to identify and strengthen ties with youth-serving nonprofit organizations in the Northern Virginia; metropolitan Washington, DC; and Maryland areas that helps students with financial need reach their full potential through education.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation awarded a $10,000 Good Neighbor Grant to the CAMPUS program. CAMPUS is an academic and college preparation program designed to meet the specific needs of Loudoun County Public School (LCPS) students who are prospective first-generation college students in attaining higher post-secondary education.
CAMPUS Program Manager Chris Clarke says the grant will enable students to double the number of college visits they will attend in 2019-20. Currently, students visit one college in the fall semester and a second in the spring semester. The grant will cover transportation costs, as well as the cost of meals during the trips.

School Counseling Resources & Information
One of our own!
Billie Pavicic, former LCPS counselor who worked at Dominion Trail for 7 years has published a series of books about Parker Plum. Parker Plum and the Rotten Egg Thoughts (February 2019) is a great resource for growth mindset and perseverance. Parker Plum and the Journey Through the Catacombs (August 2019) helps with self-acceptance. Check out the review by Nicole Moore, Liberty ES on the back cover. Both books are great for work with individuals, small groups, and classroom lessons and can be purchased on Amazon or through Boystown Press.
