From Your Assistant Principal, Mr. S
Hello team! Here is a Special Education General Update:
- Many collaborative and special education teachers have noticed and shared their concerns about the increase in ARC meetings this year. There are multiple reasons for this. We have welcomed several new transfer students with IEPs. Many of these students are out of state students which require us to have “Accept” IEP meetings that often times require consent and re-evaluation meetings to see if these students qualify for services according to the KY eligibility requirements. Additionally, we have had more student referrals based on parent and teacher concerns. With these additional meetings, occasionally “staffings” are necessary to meet collectively prior to ARCs.
- As a reminder about the RTI and Special Education process, we are required to have six to eight weeks of progress monitoring data to track and evaluate the success of targeted interventions.
- After at least six to eight weeks, if the data does not show adequate growth and the ARC agrees to move forward with the special education evaluation route, by law, we have a maximum of 60 days to complete the evaluation from the day we receive consent from parents or guardians. The Boone County timeline requires us to complete our evaluations within 40-50 school days of the consent meetings. We understand that these timelines can be frustrating for parents and teachers alike. Mrs. Rainey and our Special Education teachers are busy with so many evaluations, observations, etc. They are working hard to get their assessments and observations completed as early as possible so that we can reconvene and review the results as an ARC and start services, if eligible.
- I have added two resources attached – Attached is the special education referral form for teachers who have concerns about students who are not making adequate progress. Please have all required sections completed prior to submitting to Mr. S. For your own records, it is recommended that you make a copy for your own records prior to turning in to Mr. S. (Within 10 days of receiving referral an ARC is scheduled with at least 7 days’ notice to the parent.)
- The second resource is the link for the KY Administrative Regulations for Special Education Services for more detailed information, timelines, areas of eligibility in KY, etc.

Student Feedback
Here are some examples of the little pieces of feedback I saw:
This worked for me!
I got to answer for myself before we told our group.
Everything was available to come back to on the Chromebook.
Something that helped me was the compare and contrast.
I could read the passage twice.
We got to read the story ourselves before round-robin reading.
The questions were not too easy and not too hard!
You can see some trend data here that your class likes reading the passage first on their own. There are also some outliers. This question gave those students time to reflect on what works for them and what their strengths are, and then they can share it with you. You can then use that information to help this child understand a skill with which they may be struggling. For example, one child shared with you that his strength is compare/contrast. You can then use that structure to help him understand another one that proves to be difficult.
This change could help me.
Make it more compare and contrast (this is a different student than the one mentioned above)
I would change the passage from the computer to the paper because that would be more comfortable
A paper copy for highlighting
I would rather have a paper copy to why light
Probably make the letters a little bigger on the text so it does not get confusing
Bigger font more pics for visual
You can also see trend data here. The students would like a paper copy next time and agree on certain needs when it comes to the electronic texts. There were also some that said "I don't have an recommendations" on this one.
If you were able to accept this challenge, I would love to hear from you!
