First in Math Team of the Week

Congratulations to this week's First in Math team of the week ... Mrs. Falk's class with 2995 stars earned last week. The other top teams for last week by grade level are Mrs. Caudle with 1032 stars, Mrs. Andrews with 211 stars, Mrs. Khalil with 134 stars, and Mrs. Horton with 2027 stars.

Stay tuned next week for a class trophy for the top earner and medals for the top student in each classroom!

Engineers Week

I didn't get any response from you all last newsletter about Engineers Week. Does that mean we don't want to participate this year? I hope not. Please let me know if you are interested in helping. Or, just give me your thoughts on what we should do based on last year.

This year the dates are February 23 - 27.

Also if you know anyone who works in the field of engineering who might be willing to come and work with the kids, please let me know who they are as well.

An App and a Snack

Join me this afternoon! We will be exploring World Book Online and possibly taking a quick look at Smore.

This semester An App & A Snack will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month (unless there is a need for a special session at another time).

STEM Parent Night

We are proud of all of the work we have been doing at Chapman this year with STEM, so we want to show off to our parents. We will be having a STEM Parent Night on Thursday, January 29. Some of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be showing off what they know about STEM and being leaders as they lead parents and families through a few of our favorite STEM activities so far this year.

More details are coming soon, but plan to come and join us!

Our STEM day for this month is January 30. I am attaching a link below to my Dropbox folder with 5 ideas for projects for this month. You will notice that I did not include a grade level on these activities. I think they can all be adapted to any level.

As usual, please let me know if I can help you or your grade level with planning or gathering materials!

I'm looking to see who is reading carefully this week. Let me know that you see this message by the end of the day on Wednesday, and I will bring in some treats later this week. Don't tell anyone else though!!

Digital Citizenship

Once again, this month's focus is on the digital trail we all leave behind. Our students are using social media and the internet, so it's our responsibility to make sure they are aware of the digital footprint they are leaving behind.

For K-2, check out "Follow the Digital Trial", for 3-4 take a look at "Super Digital Citizen", and 5th grade check out "Trillion Dollar Footprint". Also remember that if you are doing research this month, you might want to check on lessons on citing sources, searching effectively, or copyright. I can help you find good lessons for all of these topics!

Once you have taught your 5th lesson (many of you will do so this month), you are ready to apply for Common Sense Media certification. See me for details when you are ready.

For Your Information

  1. If you need to access your transcript (for recertification purposes) on PD360, there is a video that shows you how to do so on Go to the Teacher Page, then the filing cabinet and look under Edivation (PD360).
  2. If you are a Twitter user, you may have noticed that Twitter is now open to staff. Please share photos and ideas of what you are doing in the classroom using #7IgnitesUs. You can also use the handles @7Ignites and @D7Super as well. Let's show off some of the amazing things we are doing here at Chapman!
