January 12th, 2018
Dr. Martin Luther Kind Day - Schools are closed Monday, January 15th, 2018.
When you work hard and try your best ...we all notice and appreciate the great & 'Fin'tastic effort ...well done!
"Check In/Check Out" Piloted at HES...an extension of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports) brought parents, students, classroom teachers and assigned mentors together to 'kick-off' this 2nd grade pilot program. Students will begin to "check in/check out" with their mentors daily through out the year, focusing on the positive attributes of their day!
Students (K-4) began to measure their mid-year progress in ELA & Math using the online Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) program.
ACCESS goes on-line to measure student's progress in English Language proficiency!

Please remember to dress in layers. New England is known for it's unpredictable weather, so please plan accordingly!
Here are some 'annual' gentle reminders:
-Please dress for the outdoors, hats, gloves, coats, (no shorts) and boots if needed
-Please provide extra pants or leggings in your child’s backpack. Accidents happen and kids can get wet/muddy when they are playing outside
-Please check your child’s head once a week. Headlice is part of Elementary School life and checking your child's head is the best way to stop the spread. For more information please read the attached 2 page informational letter.
-Please make sure your child has breakfast. We have breakfast here if time is tight.
-This time of year is especially hectic. Please make sure your child is getting to bed in time to ensure enough sleep. Unplug for at least one hour before bedtime. This is a great time to read or catch up on the happening of the day.
-Please keep your child home if they are sick! An extra day (24 hours) is required to rest and recover once a fever is below 100.4 without fever reducing medication, and any vomiting has stopped.
INDOOR RECESS OR NOT?
We use the National Weather Service chart (below)
NWS Windchill Information and Chart
www.nws.noaa.gov/om/cold/wind_chill.shtml
as our guideline for determining if the temperatures are too low and frostbite could occur if we were to go outside for recess, otherwise we try to go out and get some 'fresh air' daily.
As you can see in the attached link, it would take extreme temps (i.e. below zero & combined with high winds) and 30 minutes exposure before you'd be in danger of frostbite. Knowing that our recess is 25 minutes, the danger of frostbite at recess is minimal.
Please remember to dress the children in layers as the weather can change hourly here in New England.
We will make every effort to get students outdoors for recess (except in rain or if the surfaces are ice covered and untreated.)
Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

Morning Music Selection of the Week at HES!
Pizzicato for Strings.
This is music for a string orchestra or string a quartet by the English composer Benjamin Britten. It was written between December 1933 and February 1934 in Lowestoft, using bits of music that the composer had written for the piano as a young teenager, between 1923 and 1926. It was composed for string orchestra and was first performed in1934 with Britten conducting the orchestra.
The music sounds different because the players do not use their bow to play the music, but they pluck the strings. This kind of playing is called PIZZICATO.
The piece is dedicated to Audrey Alston, who taught Britten to play the viola during his childhood. The piece is based on eight tunes which Britten wrote during his childhood and which he liked a lot. He completed this piece at the age of twenty.
"HARWICH HIGH FIVES" for this week!

-To the students who worked hard and tried their best completing their on-line sessions (ACCESS & MAP) to show the progress they've made mid-year and to the Technology department and classroom teachers for their support administering their sessions!
