Tools that Scientists Use
How they record, observe, and predict our weather patterns
What do we really want to know?
Sometimes mom tells me to put a coat on because the weather man said it was going to be cold today. How does he know? Let's do some research and find out what they use to figure out what the weather is going to be!
Anemometer
Measures the qualities of the wind that is blowing in the area. They measure wind strength and direction, giving scientists vital information on where and how fast storms are moving.
Barometer
Barometers use air or mercury to measure the pressure of the atmosphere. Changes in pressure can show scientists what types of weather patterns are developing, providing early warnings signs for such destructive events as tornadoes and hurricanes.
Psychrometers
Psychrometers use different sets of thermometers to measure relative humidity at a specific location.
