The Battle of Vicksburg

Monica Rouse - Beverly Sholar - Fourth Period

Background

In a series of different maneuvers the Union General, Ulysses Grant and his army crossed the Mississippi and drove the Confederate army out into the defensive lines surrounding the fortress city of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

May 19th

The Confederate surrender following the siege at Vicksburg is sometimes considered, when combined with Gen. Robert E. Lee's defeat at Gettysburg the previous day. It also cut off communication with Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi Department for the remainder of the war.

The capture of Vicksberg split the Confederacy in half and was a major turning point of the Civil War.
