Life Before The Constitution
Life As A Banker
I am a member of a wealthy banker and a trade,or merchant family ,and I work in New York. I make a lot of money , by doing my job of giving out loans , and then getting interest by on those loans. But suddenly very sad and unforgiving things have been happening! There is a new system where people are allowed to pay back their debts, in not money, but in corn and tobacco. This is outrageous , because i have not been receiving any money back on my loans. The state legislatures are out of control, and its all because of those poor people voting for it.I wish my state could just imprison people for not paying their debts, but a man named Daniel Shays made sure that couldn't happen. But being the smart man I am, I've bought up thousands of dollars of Government bonds from previous soldiers, and now I've been receiving money back on those bonds! I'm going to be rich!
Life as an enslaved African american
Me and my entire family are enslaved African Americans, and we live and work on a tobacco plantation in Virginia. I thought the Declaration of Independence was going to help someone like me, but all it did was say I have black skin, and it made me born a slave. My life as being a slave is well, though. I wake at dawn and work till' dark, and then come home to only have to do more work after returning. Me and my family are always trying to make ourselves a better life, but if we're not careful our master will realize, and he'll sell us to South Carolina, where we're all split up. I might never see them again if that happens!! But me and my family might never have to worry about splitting up again , because of the Constitutional Convention. The Constitutional Convention strengthens me and my families chance at freedom. But even if we receive freedom we would have to start from scratch , because we aren't allowed to own anything, so we would most likely become poor farmers. But we want REAL freedom, so we will have to work hard for want we want , but hey that's life.
Life As A Farmer
I'm a part of a farming family living in Massachusetts, with a small amount of land. I'm only able to grow enough food for me and enough to profit from. I'm also terribly in debt, because my crops failed last year and i had to get a loan to buy food and new supplies. The bank i received my loan from are demanding my reimbursement, and because of that I can't pay my taxes. I could be jailed or be sent off to repay all of my debts!!!! But the worse part of all of this is, that i can't even feed my own family, when they all fought for peoples freedom, and feed the soldiers in the Revolution. And I did receive my freedom, but i can't even feed my family or go to sleep at night not worried that i could be taken away and jailed. So one day i decided to do something about it!!!! Me , along with about 1,000 other people, protested with guns and swords, and I was able to stop the trails of several debtors and closed down courts for MONTHS!! I felt like for once, I finally made a difference. I just hope that what i fought for stands, and maybe this new "Constitution" will assure me of my worries, but I'm also worried that this new "Constitution" will give the federal government all the power it needs to rule out someone like me!!!! But, i guess we'll see, huh?!
