Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Do you think it's a coincidence that Teacher Appreciation Week is in May, at a time when perhaps you could use a little boost to make it to the end of the year? It's a good time for students and parents to reflect on this year's accomplishments, and the important part you have played in children's lives.

Here is a little background on today's Google Doodle, designed by this year's TOY, Rodney Robinson. The article also mentions a donation Google is making to Donors Choose for funds given today and tomorrow.

Even Jeopardy's in on the act with the Teachers Tournament!

Spread the word: what special things is your school doing for Teacher Appreciation Week? If you tweet them out, feel free to tag us, and we'll retweet them! As a matter of fact, feel free to tag us any time, and we'll be happy to share the great things you are doing!

IMLEA Conference, September 29-30

Big picture

Show a team of teachers (or more) that you appreciate them by sending them to the 2019 IMLEA Conference. Our conference website is now live. You may register your staff members (no price increase) and make hotel reservations (an increase of only $3 from last year.) Here are just a few of the breakout sessions that will be offered:

  • eLearning Days Panel on Best Practices
  • The Return of Katie Powell!
  • Mindful in the Middle: Realistic Technology Integration
  • Coordinating Services for Special Needs Students
  • Problem-Based Learning in a Traditional Setting
  • Digital Safety
  • Developing Student Leaders through Inquiry

Deadline to Nominate Outstanding School Counselors

Show a special school counselor that you appreciate him/her through a nomination for Indiana School Counselor of the Year. Nominations are due May 10. Sometimes middle schools are under-represented in the awards, and we want to improve that!

Register for Free CS (Computer Science) First Workshops

Five-Star Technology is hosting five free professional development workshops on implementing Google's CS First, their free, ready-to-teach computer science curriculum for grades 4-8. There are two workshops in southern Indiana, one northern, and two central between June 11 and July 18. More information is available here.

(Almost) Free STEM Kits from the Civil Air Patrol

Librarian friends told me about this great opportunity from the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). After you join as an educator (one-time fee of $35, free renewal), you are eligible to receive several fabulous kits (and keep them!) You can see the kits here. They include robotics, Sphero, BeeBots, a flight simulator, weather, and more. Friends have told me that additional information they receive has also been interesting.

Robotics Grants Available from TechPoint

If your school does not already have a VEX IQ Robotics team, you are eligible to apply for a grant from TechPoint. Up to 100 Indiana middle school grants will be awarded. There are certain obligations in regards to competitions and other events. The list of what schools receive, the application and further information are available here.

Free Trial of Active History

Although this is from the UK, the ActiveHistory website by Russel Tarr has many simulations, games, and other activities that can be (and are) applied in US classrooms. Looking for some new ideas to try out before the end of the year? Looking for next year? You can find the details of a free two-week trial here.
  • Not just for history teachers: Russel Tarr is also the man behind ClassTools.net, used by teachers in just about every subject!

Special Workshop Opportunities from INSPIRE3!

Lisa Crick, INSPIRE3 Northeast IN Field Rep, and Beth Smith, INSPIRE3 Consultant, will be presenting Three Free 1/2 day INSPIRE3 Service-Learning Workshop Opportunities for Educators, Counselors, Instructional Coaches. These three workshops are in different locations in Northeastern Indiana on June 18 and 19. View the details, content, and registration link of the workshops in the document below.
