Principally Speaking
Welcome back students and families! I am hopeful that your time away was restful and fulfilling!
During our first week back our students have been adjusting to the schedule of getting up for school again. Please encourage reasonable bedtimes. The brains of our middle schoolers are growing at a very fast rate, only surpassed by the first year of life. Adolescence is a critical time for brain growth . Significant intellectual processes are emerging. Adolescents are moving from concrete to abstract thinking and to the beginnings of metacognition (the active monitoring and regulation of thinking processes). They are developing skills in deductive reasoning, problem solving, and generalizing. We need rested brains each day for the best learning to take place.
This week and next students will be taking middle of the year SRI and SMI, Scholastic Reading Inventory and Scholastic Math Inventory. These are assessment tools that provide us a snapshot of how we are doing and how much learning has occurred from the beginning of the year. As we finalize all this data, I am looking forward to sharing our progress with you. Please encourage your students to give their best effort on these assessments, as they drive our instructional planning.
On a personal note, I don't know how many of you know that I earned my bachelor's degree and ran cross country and track at Clemson University, AND I am so excited for my Tigers to be in a rematch with Alabama for the NCAA Football Championship! Go CLEMSON!
As always, I am honored and thankful to serve you and your students as the principal of Danville Community Middle School.
Sincerely,
Marsha Webster
Principal

DCMS PTO News
Happy New Year! Great way to kick off the new year with the ending of our box tops and Campbell's Soup labels contest! The final day to turn them in is MONDAY January 9th. Send them in a Ziploc bag with their teacher's name. Remember, the winning class on 5/6 side and 7/8 side will receive a $4 voucher to Royal Movie Theater, and each winning teacher will receive an Amazon gift card. Thanks for all your clipping and saving!
We hope it's your New Year's Resolution to volunteer more, and we have the place for you! Volunteers are needed for the bookstore and making copies for the teachers on Monday, Thursday and Friday. You need to be at the school at 8:10 AM to set up the bookstore and make copies. Copies are usually finished between 9-10 AM depending on how much is needed to copy. This is a great way to get involved in your child's school and to give a portion of your time. Please go to volunteerspot at http://signup.com/go/LtcGhz to sign up for your available days even if only once a month. Your time is appreciated!
Our next PTO meeting will be Friday, January 13 at 11:15 AM in the conference room. Hope you can attend. Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas for our activities for the second half of the school year. Come and get involved!

An Itchy Topic: Head Lice
In accordance with school corporation policy, we are required to share our pediculosis policy with the public on an annual basis. We have also included general information for your reading pleasure.
The main way head lice spread is from close, prolonged head-to-head contact. Head lice are crawling insects. They cannot jump, hop, or fly. There is a small chance that head lice will spread because of sharing items such as combs, brushes, and hats.
Many people have the impression that a person becomes infested with head lice because s/he is unclean. This is NOT TRUE. Frequent bathing neither prevents head lice nor eliminates the infestation.
Head lice are elongated insects and are greyish-white in color. They do not have wings nor can they jump. They do move very quickly which can make it difficult to find in a child's hair. Because they can be so hard to see, the diagnosis of head lice is often made by examining the scalp for NITS. A nit is the louse egg. It is tear-shaped and varies in color from white to yellowish-brown. Head lice attach each nit to a hair shaft in a water-proof, cement-like substance. This means they cannot be washed or brushed out of the hair or scalp like dandruff and other such particles that sometimes look like nits to the naked eye. Clusters of nits may be found in any section of the hair so a careful examination should be made of the entire scalp.
Attached is a sheet with information from the American Academy of Pediatrics about head lice and DCSC Pediculosis (head lice) Policy.
