Spartan Weekly
News from Glen Crest Middle School: October 3, 2021
From the Principal
This week we officially crossed into the second half of first trimester. If you haven't checked grades on PowerSchool, now would be a good time to do it. If you or your student are not happy with a grade, there is still time to bring it up before the trimester ends. Please encourage your student to ask for help from a teacher if they need it.
Parents, please remind your students to bring their ID's, two face masks and their water bottles every day. The water fountains are not on, but the bottle filling stations are. The students need to drink water throughout the day and we don't want them missing class time to go fill up a dixie cup. We are also giving out a lot of masks in the morning because students are not bringing one from home. Please remind your student to bring a mask and a back-up as we do not have an unlimited supply
I know I have said this before, but PLEASE pull all the way through the drop off/pick up lane in the morning and afternoon. Making u-turns creates dangerous situations. I have personally observed several near misses in the last week.
If your student is absent or needs to arrive late or leave early, please remind them to check Google classroom to see what they are missing. Teachers are posting class assignments daily and this can prevent your student from falling behind and feeling overwhelmed.
This Friday, we are trying something new for our half day. Due to Covid, we cannot have assemblies this year, so we thought we would build in some team celebrations and social emotional learning on the half day. The students will rotate through four stations: goal setting, a community service project, team building activities and a team celebration. Be sure to ask them about it!
Vision and Hearing screening will take place at Glen Crest on Wednesday, October 20th. As mandated by the Illinois State Board of Education, the following students will be screened:
Vision screening for all 8th grade students .
Vision and Hearing screening for all students new to school in D89, all students with an IEP, foster children, and by request by a teacher or parent.
Please let the school nurse know if you would like your child screened for vision and/or hearing if they do not fit into one of the above listed groups.
If your child has glasses prescribed, please make sure they have their glasses at school the day of screening.
Picture re-takes are October 13th. This is also the time for first time pictures if your student was absent on picture day. Please remind your student to have their picture taken even if you do not want to order a picture package. These pictures are used for the yearbook and we want every student included.
8th grade students - PSAT day is coming October 16th. Drop off is at 7:45. Most students will finish at 11:00. If your student has an accommodation for extra time, they will finish a little later.
Tik Tok challenges to be aware of...
Please talk with your students about this topic and use this as a learning opportunity about social media. Thank you for your support!

News from the district
Updated exclusion guidance for sick students
This week, the DuPage County Health Department made a small update to their COVID-19 exclusion rules. The health department advises that students should be excluded from school for 48 hours after diarrhea or vomiting have stopped. Prior to COVID-19, the recommendation had been to wait one day after diarrhea or vomiting had stopped. Students should also be fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medicine) before they return to school. This adjustment is related to COVID-19 guidance. Please contact your doctor or the school nurse if you have questions.
