6th Grade Band Information

Especially important if this is your first child in band

All 6th Graders are required to take a full year of music

Choices are band, orchestra or music exploratory which is a full year class where students work to improve music reading, music listening and performance skills.

In addition, all students have a second period of "encore" classes which all rotate through art, middle school skills, applied technology and family and consumer science.

6th Grade Band meets during the school day, as a class, every other day

Outside of school practice requirement is the same as 5th grade, 90 minutes a week. In addition, all students receive one pull out lesson every six days. Lessons are in small groups and the times rotate. Currently, the sixth grade has four performances: a fall program in November, a joint concert with the beginners in January, a spring concert in May and Music in the Parks Festival at Six Flags Great America near the end of the school year.

At the end of 6th grade, auditions are held for placement into one of two ability based bands: symphonic and concert band.

Is open to 7th and 8th grade band members. Auditions are held in the fall of 7/8th grade and meets before school once a week at 7:00 am.

Every year the Symphonic Band takes a trip. Past travels have taken them to Disneyworld, San Antonio, Branson and Cleveland. The Concert Band also takes a yearly trip, typically a cultural experience in downtown Chicago.

As we get closer to the end of the year, band members will need to make a decision about 6th grade band. They will receive a form at the first big band rehearsal to fill out and return to me. We are pleased to report that our attrition rate from 5th to 6th grade has traditionally been very low, typically only about 5% of students decide not to continue in band at the middle school.

I am excited for you to hear the older CHMS students perform at our Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 6th at 6:00 pm. I think you will be amazed by the quality of their playing. I am also proud to say that the Concert Band AND the Symphonic Band just earned first division ratings at district band contest. Your children will be in great hands with Mr. Melbourn and Mr. Lehman!

Many band students also participate in the vocal music program at CHMS.

Eagle Singers - This is an after school chorus open to all 6th grade students that meets Mondays and Wednesdays after school until 3:35; participants can take the late bus. The season runs from September through December. Performances include the CHMS Winter Concert, Hinsdale Christmas Walk (sing inside Harris Bank), and the Field Museum (sing in the Great Hall). Following the performance at the Field Museum we will attend a musical in Chicago. Next year we will be seeing "The Lion King".

All- School Musical - This activity is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. While it is a no cut activity, auditions must be held to assign parts. Auditions are held in December. Rehearsals run January through March and the performances are right before spring break.
