D. W. Daniel Newsletter
October 2018
Message from the Principal
As fall approaches, we are looking forward to many exciting events happening at Daniel High School!
On Oct. 9 we will host our first College Application Day. We encourage all of our seniors to take advantage of this event. Many colleges have already started accepting applications for their 2019-2020 school enrollment. On this day, guidance counselors and admission counselors will work with our students as they apply to college. For those who have questions about the admissions process, this will be a great opportunity to ask the questions and receive answers. As an added bonus, TriCounty Technical College has waived their application fees during this month. Any senior can apply to TCTC for free! In order to be able to apply to different schools, seniors will need to know their social security number, provide a copy of their driver’s license, and (if there is a fee) provide payment via a credit/debit card.
We will also be administering the PSAT on Oct. 10 and the ACCUPLACER on Oct. 30. Both assessments will help prepare students for their post-secondary plans. Please read the newsletter for information about these two assessments.
On Sept. 14 Student Council hosted Club Fest, an annual event that showcases all of the clubs at Daniel. Students got to spend lunch looking at the many diverse clubs offered at our school. It is our belief that extracurricular activities can help students feel more connected to their school. In a recently completed student survey, we found that over half of our students were involved in some type of extra-curricular activity! We offer many opportunities for our students to find their niche at our school and are diligently working to expand options based on students’ needs. Whether it is the eSports team, football team, band, AFJROTC, Interact, or another one of our offerings, we hope to provide something that our students can be involved in all four years of high school.
Exciting things are happening at Daniel High. Our students are excelling in the classroom and in their extracurricular activities. We are proud of our students, our faculty, and our community. Thank you for all you do to support us.
Go Lions and One Daniel!

On Oct. 30 (B Day), all Juniors will take the ACCUPLACER test. Juniors will be excused from class and assigned either a morning or afternoon testing time.

New This Year!

The bus will only run on Thursday afternoons! Parents must fill out the Google Form (https://tinyurl.com/successbus1819) each week before Tuesday for a student to ride this bus.
Math and English assistance will be available each day. If other academic assistance is needed, please email Mrs. Norris, amandanorris@pickens.k12.sc.us, Mrs. Qualkinbush, leeannqualkinbush@pickens.k12.sc.us, or Ms. Bruner, charlottebruner@pickens.k12.sc.us.

Student Council
While the school year has just begun, Student Council was still busy during the month of September with the planning and execution of Club Fest. Club Fest promotes participation in the clubs and organizations offered at Daniel. It's also an opportunity for students to enjoy a shared lunch to listen to music, eat pizza, play games, and socialize! We look forward to hosting this event each year.
This year during Spirit Week (Oct. 8-12), we are raising money for a playground for the Dream Center of Pickens County. The Dream Center is a special organization that “serves those in need by giving them a hand up instead of a hand out by empowering them to grow towards becoming healthy and self-sufficient.”
The Dream Center has a unique program, the tiny houses of Opportunity Village. Tiny homes are available to residents who commit to the rigorous program that involves developing the skills to be successful in the future. Recently, the Dream Center has helped one of its residents, Hope, regain custody of her two little girls. Soon the girls will join Hope in the Opportunity Village. We are trying to raise enough money to fund a playground for families like Hope and her girls. If you would like to make a donation to our cause please visit www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/NDE2Mjg= today!

From Our Athletic Director
Our fall sports seasons are underway. We appreciate the hard work of our student-athletes and coaches and encourage students, parents, and fans to come out and support our teams. Check the website for fall sports schedules.
Here are some helpful tips for football season:
- All tickets are $6, for anyone 5K and up. You may now purchase home game tickets in advance by visiting http://gofan.co/app/school/SC580.
- All student drop-offs and pick-ups must be at the front of the school. Parents are not allowed on the stadium road.
- If an individual leaves the stadium, another ticket must be purchased in order to re-enter the game.
- Students who purchased activity cards need to enter at the far left gate on the home side of the stadium. Students without activity cards are required to purchase a ticket. Students interested in purchasing an activity card may see Mrs. Turner in the front office. Activity cards may only be used for regular season home games; they may not be used for jamborees and playoff games.
PlaySafe
There are more than 2 million injuries occurring in high school sports each year. High school athletes sustain more injuries than college and professional athletes annually. The rate of injury translates into 500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations.
So who is protecting your children when they participate in high school sports and who pays for that protection?
PlaySafe, a 501c(3) non-profit organization located in Anderson strives to support essential sports medicine services to our athletic youth and community. PlaySafe believes that professional, competent sports medicine services, beginning with a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) are critical to safe and healthy athletic participation.
The state of South Carolina does not pay for this invaluable service. PlaySafe is working diligently to raise the funds from individuals, corporations and grantors, in an effort to sustain the 11 ATCs’ currently in place and to grow to meet the demand from the schools and most importantly the parents of student athletes.
The athletic trainers you see on the sidelines, courtside, and on the field are there as a result of PlaySafe and are employees of PlaySafe. PlaySafe places athletic trainers at the high schools in Anderson, Pickens, Oconee and Aiken counties on a full-time basis due to 62% of the injuries occurring at practice. Serious injury, a misdiagnosis and premature return to action can result in death. Certified athletic trainers are experts in sports related injury prevention, assessment and care.
Without PlaySafe, our student athletes are participating in sports at a higher degree of risk than those with the professionals on hand. Daniel High is pleased to have Shawn Arnett Shawn.Arnett@playsafesc.org back with us for another year thanks to PlaySafe! For more information on PlaySafe and how you can get involved, please visit www.playsafesc.org.
