All Things E.Q.
The topic this week is MISTAKES. Ironically, I made mistakes in how I handled my kid's mistakes. I used to get frustrated and punitive when my kids made a mistake.
My go-to line was:
"What were you thinking?"
What was I thinking? What did I expect my kids to say in response to my angry question? To be honest, I didn't think that far ahead. I just reacted. I wasn't really thinking about my kids at all, only my own anger.
Now, when my kids make that inevitable mistake, whether it is on their homework, or dropping pasta sauce all over (true story), I just pause a moment, breathe and try to remind myself that mistakes have a purpose, and they do not necessarily require a punishment.
Now, I try to use this response instead:
"You made a mistake. We all do.
What can you learn from this one?"
When we have a more positive response to our kids when they make a mistake, we teach them that mistakes can have a purpose - they can help us learn - rather than being about how we messed up.
Not being afraid to make mistakes is important. We want our kids to be willing to get out of their comfort zone and try new things. Mistakes are a natural part of that process. If our kids are afraid of making mistakes, they may become too afraid to challenge themselves and try new things.
Which is why the motto in school this week is:
Mistakes make me better if I let them!
When your child makes a mistake, remind them that making mistakes is normal. In fact, it's often how we learn. Tell them that everyone makes mistakes and often the people who are the best at what they do have made the most mistakes. They simply choose to learn from each one, so they don't make the same mistake again. Mistakes can be helpful; you just have to ask yourself, "What can I learn from this one?"
I have made plenty of mistakes when it comes to parenting, PLENTY. I just keep learning from each one. I am going to be an AWESOME Grandma! ;)
