Navigation Notes
Happy January Westside Families! Thank you for getting your students to school and ON TIME last week for our "soft start" to the second semester.
I have updated this newsletter with just a few more details to support you and your child for the upcoming week, so please be sure to browse through.
We are back to EARLY DISMISSAL Fridays this week and for the remainder of the year! Students will begin dismissal at 1:15pm, so please ensure they are being met off buses or picked up at this time.
Next Monday, January 16th, is a school holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School will resume Tuesday, January 17th.
Academic Support Program (ASP) for this semester will resume the week of January 17th. There is NO ASP this coming week.
As always, thank you for your support! Our office will be open Monday-Friday from 7:30AM-3:30PM. Please come on in if we can assist you in any way.

New Playground Enhancements
The next phase will be new soccer goals for our campus, the arrival of picnic tables and more sports equipment for students to use.
Thank you to all who fundraised last year in our Fun Run to help provide all of these enhancements this year!

Progress Monitoring Assessments This Week
VPK-2nd Graders:
- Students in grades VPK, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd will take the second session of their Early Literacy/Reading assessments.
- K-2 will assess on Wednesday and Thursday. VPK will work through the week on their assessments.
- Assessments are all digital and taken on the iPads or computers.
- Data will be share with you by January 20th.
- Students with accommodations will be provided those during assessments.
4th-6th Graders:
- Students will take the second Writing Assessment from our Reading curriculum this week on Wednesday, January 11th.
- They will have 120 minutes to read supporting documents, plan, and compose a written response to the prompt.
- Students will be typing their response into the computer platform, but will have a hard copy planning sheet for notes and outlines.
- Students with accommodations will be provided those during assessments.
- Results will be share with families upon scoring.
3rd-6th Graders:
- Intermediate students will take their second F.A.S.T. assessment the week of July 17th.
- ELA and Math will be assessed by the state.
- Assessment is computer-based.
- Results will be shared within 2 weeks of completion.
- Data points from these assessments help guide interventions and make decisions about students' ability to master grade level standards.

Report Cards Due to hurricane delays, the 2nd quarter will end on January 11th and Report Cards will now be issued on January 19th. If your child is NOT making satisfactory progress towards grade level standards, you will receive a written notification (Mid-Year Progression Letter) in their Report Card envelope. This is not a retention letter, but just notification that your child is working below grade level at this time. | Award Ceremonies Although Report Cards will not be issued until January 19th, we will be keeping our original dates for award ceremonies. If your child is receiving an award, you will be notified by the teacher in your child's Thursday folder by January 12th. Schedule is a follows: Wednesday, January 18th Kindergarten (8:15a) 2nd grade (8:50), 1st grade (9:30) Thursday, January 19th 5th grade (8:15a) 4th grade (8:50) 3rd grade (9:30) Friday, January 20th 6th grade (9:00a) | Science Fair Workshops Parents & Students in grades 4-6 have a free opportunity to receive support building their Science Fair boards on January 11th and January 18th from 5:00-7:00pm. During these sessions, parents and their children will finalize their documentation and work on assembling their boards together. Staff will be on hand to support questions and offer recommendations. Students who attended the Science Fair Orientation Night will receive a FREE science board and others may purchase them at the workshop for $3 (CASH ONLY). **A Parent or Guardian MUST accompany students. Report Cards

Science Fair Workshops
Students who attended the Science Fair Orientation Night will receive a FREE science board and others may purchase them at the workshop for $3 (CASH ONLY).
**A Parent or Guardian MUST accompany students. No drop offs permitted**
Youth Truth SurveyWestside Elementary wants to hear from our students in 3rd – 6th grade! Brevard Public School’s is partnering with YouthTruth to hear what students have to say about their school experience! This valuable feedback will guide our efforts as a staff and school to give students the best learning environment possible. Students in grades 3-6 will complete this survey in their classrooms during the week of January 9th through January 13th. Progress Monitoring In January, all students will take the second round of Progress Monitoring assessments required by the state. This is the exact same assessment given in the fall and will show the growth your child has made in their first semester. The data will be shared with you shortly after their completion so you are aware of their progress. Students who are afforded accommodations will receive them for this assessment process. More information will be coming home to you soon. | Conference Night Westside will be hosting our mid-year Parent Conference Night on Wednesday, January 26th from 5:00-7:00PM. Your child's teacher will reach out to you with a schedule in the near future. |
Youth Truth Survey
Westside Elementary wants to hear from our students in 3rd – 6th grade! Brevard Public School’s is partnering with YouthTruth to hear what students have to say about their school experience! Our BPS safety protocols require any adult on campus during school hours must be a registered volunteer.
Friday is Family Lunch Day!
We had a good turnout for our Parent/Student Lunch Day last Friday! Thank you to the families who joined us and we look forward to seeing more of you this Friday.
At this time, we must follow the parameters listed below per BPS guidelines:
- This opportunity will only be available on Fridays.
- Only adults on the approved pick-up list for a child will be allowed to have lunch with students. You will need to present your photo ID at the front office and receive a visitor's tag. When done, you must sign out before leaving campus.
- A designated area will be provided for the adult and student.
- Adults will only be allowed to eat lunch with THEIR child and we request only two adults per child please.
- Adults who are not registered volunteers will be monitored by school staff at all times.
- Adults will be permitted to be on campus for lunch for their child's 30-minute lunch block (times listed at end of newsletter for all classes). Once your child's lunch is over, we kindly as you to sign out and exit campus. If you have multiple children and want to have lunch with all of them, you must wait for additional lunch times in the front office, glass booth, or your vehicle.
- You may bring in food from outside sources for your child only. Any leftover drinks or snacks will not be allowed back in class however.
