UPDATE Law Enforcement Notification

Sept. 30: Social Media Concern Being Investigated

Parents/Caregivers & Staff:

The following is an update to the message provided earlier this morning regarding the social media post reported to local law enforcement late Wednesday evening.

Included in this message is a press release from the Martinsburg City Police indicating that, through their investigation, they found no credible information "that said post originated in any Berkeley County school or when it may have been taken". Please note that while the post was reported to the Martinsburg High School administration the post did not indicate a threat against that school or any particular school in our county.

Circling back to this morning's message:

When any threat is made, no matter how much detail is provided, it is the practice of Berkeley County Schools and our local and state law enforcement partners to act swiftly and thoroughly. The balance of keeping our families informed, discouraging copycat behavior and consideration of any actions that might compromise the investigation are top of mind when we communicate with our school community. Even though the post did not name a school, nor did it indicate that it was from our county or state, we wanted you to know that we were aware of it and working jointly with law enforcement to identify the owner of the post. These factors as a whole are what prompted our notification of BCS families and community.

I want to thank our law enforcement agencies for the increased presence in our school communities and for working with us to investigate this threat to the health, safety and education of our students, staff, and community.
