INFLUENZA ADVISORY
Influenza (also known as flu) is a common viral respiratory infection.
Influenza is not “stomach flu”, a term used by some to describe illnesses causing vomiting or diarrhea. If you think your child has the Flu:
Tell your childcare provider or call the school. Need to stay home? Childcare and School: Yes, until the fever is gone for at least 24 hours and the child is healthy enough for routine activities. DO NOT give aspirin or salicylate-containing medicines to anyone under 18 years of age. Symptoms Your child may have chills, body aches, fever, and headache. Your child may also have a cough, runny or stuffy nose, and sore throat. Illness may last up to 7 days. If your child has been infected, it may take 1 to 4 days (usually 2 days) for symptoms to start. Spread - By coughing and sneezing. - By touching contaminated hands, objects or surfaces. Contagious Period During the 24 hours before and up to 7 days after the illness begins. Call your Healthcare Provider
♦ If anyone in your home has a high fever and/or coughs a lot. Your doctor may give medications. Antibiotics do not work for illnesses caused by a virus, including influenza. Prevention
Cover nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. Use a tissue or your sleeve. Dispose of used tissues.
Wash hands after touching anything that could be contaminated with secretions from the nose or mouth. Your child may need help with handwashing.
DO NOT share anything that goes into the mouth, such as drinking cups, straws, and water bottles. Clean and disinfect anything that comes in contact with secretions from the nose or mouth. This includes door knobs, refrigerator handle, water faucets, and cupboard handles. Use a product that kills viruses.
Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for children 6 months to 18 years of age. Ask your healthcare provider about vaccine. For more information, call Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS) at 573-751-6113 or 866-628-9891 (8-5 Monday thru Friday) or call your local health department.

Missouri Connections and Career Development 7th & 8th grades
On January 12th-18th the counselor will be going in to do a final lesson with 8th grade careers and prepping them for Stepping Up to Success. During this time 8th graders will be exposed to unfamiliar terms or concepts that they will need to know to be successful in high school. 7th graders will continue to work in Missouri Connections and start exploring specific careers they are interested in.
Stepping Up To Success 8th Grade!
On January 19th, in the morning 8th graders will have the opportunity to meet with different career professionals to hear about their jobs and discover if that is something they might be interested in doing. Also students will be able to hear from high school club leaders and the Activities/Athletic Director to start looking for ways they can get involved at the high school level. In the afternoon, students will have the chance to tour the high school, play a Breakout Session, and begin the process of their first Individual Career and Academic Plan (previously known as 4 year plan).
Registration for 2018-2019 Classes
It is time to start thinking about next school year and registration time is upon us. 6th graders will have registration in their Social Studies classes on Feb 6th and 7th graders on Feb. 8th or 9th. We will be visiting all the elementary buildings in March.
High School Registration and Parent Meeting for 8th grader
High School Counselors will be at FHS on February 21st to meet with all 8th graders through their Social Studies classes to register for 9th grade courses at FHS. There will also be a parent informational meeting that evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Fulton High School Commons Area.

This week our 6th graders will explore 3D printing. Our 7th and 8th graders will create a google slide presentation sharing information about legally using images online.
This site will share important information regarding the legal use of using images found on the Internet, why it matters, and ways to stay safe.

Physical Education:
Coach Youse's and Coach Stevenson's classes will begin Volleyball and Basketball units Monday, January 8, for two weeks.
Health:
All Coach Windmiller's classes will begin health on Monday, January 8. Students will need their Chromebooks, planner, and a writing utensil. They will stay in health for seven weeks.

2. Rhythm/Tempo: Students will be able to sing rhythms accurately, and maintain a steady beat.
3. Diction/Timbre: Students will be able to sing words clearly (able to understand the words) with their most beautiful tone quality.
4. Posture/Breath: Students will sit/stand with appropriate posture for singing, and breathe deeply to create their most beautiful tone.

We are rocking it with the new term! Students have started their Artist Presentations! Please ask your student to tell you which musical artist they are researching!

ARTS ALIVE 7:
I am looking forward to beginning our study of Verdi's Aida with this energetic group of 7th graders. We have already begun exploring acting exercises, and will soon be learning ALL about the art form of OPERA!

6th grade band will be working on sheet music as well as lines out of the book. I anticipate being in a new book by the end of the quarter. We will doing more playing tests this semester and we will be grading them on objectives.

7th Grade Band:
7th grade band will be working on their sheet music for the next concert as well as our method book that we started last semester.
Students that are preparing for solos to take to Central Methodist University music festival in March will be assigned lesson times over the next two months. It is very important that I hear these students play at least twice prior to the festival. More information will be sent out as it becomes available.
The next concert will take place at the high school in March, and it is our Parade of Bands concert. Once again, more information will be sent out as it becomes available!

8th Grade Band:
8th grade band has begun to work on sheet music for Central Methodist University music festival that will take place on March 2. The whole band performs as well as solos and small ensembles. There will be a schedule that will be sent out when the University finishes all of their scheduling.
Please be aware that students will be assigned lessons and will be expected to attend their scheduled lesson times if they are taking a solos or small ensemble to contest.

7/8th Grade Wire Choir:
Guitar classes are working on perfecting chord progressions, playing in standard notation as well as TAB.

News From The Art Room
As we move into the new year we have been going over classroom procedures and discussing “What is Art?”
In the coming weeks I will be listing objectives for classroom assignments and adding our new grading policies to my newsletter.
6th Graders should have #2 wooden pencils and at least one black fine point sharpie marker (standard Sharpie) and bring to class with them each day
7th and 8th Graders were sent home with a form to have their supplies here by Monday the 8th.
What I need for art
Art Class Kit
1 fine tip sharpie marker
1 ultra fine tip sharpie
1 pack of color pencils at least 12 different colors, more of you like.
1 pack of wooden pencils #2 (no mechanical!)
1 handheld pencil sharpener
1 pink eraser
One pencil pack to carry it all to class each day,
One pocket folder with three paper tabs to create notebooks/sketchbooks
Failure to bring these items each day counts as unprepared for art, and will result as a minor, three minors result in office referral.

Welcome, welcome, welcome!
I'm super jazzed to be helping teach your 6th grader all about the importance of the environment and what they can start doing to help better the plant.
During your 6th grader's time in environmental science, he/she will learn about:
- Ecosystems- how available resources affect organisms, food chains/ cycle of matter, and adaptations
- Human Impacts- how increases in human population affect the environment, monitoring and minimizing human impact, and limited and non-renewable resources
- Global Climate Change- examine factors responsible for climate change

The FMS Thrive Hive
The Fulton Middle School Thrive Hive opened for business on Monday, August 21st. The store is open 7:30 to 7:45 each morning. If students aren't able to shop then they can email Mrs. Horstmeier @ shortmeier@fulton58.org or Mrs. Yates @ hyates@fulton58.org for an appointment to shop.
The Thrive Hive is designed to allow students to use their Hornet Bucks--earned through the Positive Behavior Support Program--to purchase items from the store. The Thrive Hive was created to help the needs of the FMS Student Community.
Items currently needed for the store are:
Any age appropriate toys, DVD's for the holidays.
As we gear up for winter: Hats, gloves, scarves, and coats.
Snack items: Slim jims, and pop tarts.
Other needs are ear buds and water bottles.
We will be gearing up for the holiday season so baskets to make gift packages for students to purchase would be great.
All other items are appreciated as well.

As we ease back into our routine from Winter Break, we will be meeting our new Library Aides, returning those overdue books, checking out new books, and getting familiar with the Mark Twain and Truman Reader Award Nominees.
Don't forget to add a few stickers to our collage. The last one is almost complete!
Also, Library passes are available in the Thrive Hive for $20 Hornet Bucks. Buy a Library pass and come hang out with me for 25 minutes! We can play games, do STEAM activities, or you can just enjoy some quiet reading time. Posted below is a video of students who bought a Library pass and what activities they decided to do.
